Nearly 300 exhibits filled the National Room at First National Bank for Ward County’s 15th Annual Green Thumb Show. Grand winners each earned 25 dollars prizes. The Monahans-Wickett Pyote school board discussed a potential three to five cent tax rate reduction as expenditures are expected to rise by about 450,000 dollars while new mineral value funding and legislation may boost revenues by roughly 550,000 dollars. The board approved plans for a new Kindergarten, budget items, and tentative schedules, with school start anticipated August 29 and cafeteria prices adjusted for adults while student meals stay unchanged.
City Council set a 2 pm hearing on the proposed 1977 78 budget of 1 881 596 dollars and will review an appropriations ordinance. They will discuss rezoning at 225 West Sealy and hear Merchants Association request for use of East Second Street on July 28 during Krazee Daze, followed by retirement system talks and a Texas Electric rate rise.
Registration begins Monday for 425 Krazee Kash Dollars to be given away Thursday at Krazee Daze Celebration. Boxes at participating merchants allow entries for $5 Krazee Dollars valid Thursday Friday or Saturday. Drawings 5:30 on Second Street between Main and Allen with prizes of 100 dollars four 50 dollars and five 25 dollars.
Donald T. Shepard was named superintendent of the West Texas Children's Home at Pyote by the Texas Youth Council board in Austin. He succeeds Fred Conradt, now superintendent of the Waco State Home, and has a long Youth Council career including roles at Brownwood, Giddings, and the West Texas Home, plus a background in business and ranching.
Commissioners plan a 4 million dollar bond issue to fund a replacement hospital after tornado damage at Ward Memorial. Election judges will be appointed at a Monday meeting. Architects say two years to build under plans, while Hospital Affiliates predicts operation in under a year.
