The Retail Trade Committee of the Chamber of Commerce voted to hold regular monthly meetings on the first Thursday of each month. Chamber Manager Joe Corby said upcoming promotions and activities to boost home trade will drive the agenda. Monahans businessmen are urged to attend. Jack Blanchard chairs the committee.
District Judge J H Starley set a special hearing for July 28 in Pecos to act on a temporary injunction. Toyah School District seeks to block annexation by Pecos Barstow District after Starley previously ruled against Toyah on technical points in the annexation case.
County Court opens in the Commissioners Court room with 134 cases docketed for trial this week. DWI matters dominate Monday through Wednesday, totaling 58 cases, some dating far back. The docket ranges from 4346 to 5391, with 1045 total filings since the first entry. Thursday covers non DWI criminal matters, 76 in all, including traffic appeals and serious charges such as riot, weapons, and drugs. Riot counts name Luis Orosco Rafael Sanchez Johnny Uranga and Freddie Jaquez. The disturbance followed a dance at the Cow Palace on November 11, 1967, preceding arrests for aggravated assault of Cruz and Frank Jaquez.
A two car crash at West Second and Betty at 9 p m Friday injured no one but totaled about 4 500 in damage. Herman Pearce 62 Monahans was eastbound and was hit by James Foster Davis 34 Pecos who was northbound. Police say all three recent wrecks involve running the stop sign and view may be blocked by a parking lot sign.
The council plans to discuss water system improvements an oil well permit and a zoning change at 7225. Major items include five year service awards for Pat Greathouse Neil Beezley and Police Chief Bob Patterson. Four electrical board members two zoning board members and an auditor will be appointed. Citizens may speak from the floor at 2 PM Tuesday.
Monahans will largely operate normally despite a National Day of Participation proclamation tied to the lunar landing. The post office and many federal and state offices will close, but the ruling arrives too late for widespread compliance at other levels of business.
