Local initiative seeks volunteers and businesses to join a city wide clean up effort. Organizers emphasize community spirit and practical recycling goals to improve neighborhoods and public spaces.
Monahans City Council announced a proposed 1967 68 tax rate of 1.45 per hundred value down from 1.50. The cut relies on city economy but councilman Dick Hoyer warned it is a one year, one shot reduction. Budget hearing set in two weeks with J R Jenkins reappointed city auditor.
Weather observer family B. B. Rogers at 802 S. Harry reports no 100 degree readings yet this summer. Two days neared 100 with 97 to 99 degrees and forecasts suggest continued hot, but under the century, weather through the week.
The notice asks newsboy carriers to stop arriving before 10 o’clock on Mondays and Thursdays. Papers will be available at 9 o’clock, and early arrivals cause traffic hazards and congestion. Parents and boys are urged to cooperate.
The City Council of Monahans and Ward County Commissioner George Bentley announce a three year paying program to pave virtually every unpaved street in Precinct 2. The plan uses cost sharing with the city handling base work and asphalt and the county supplying material.
Tommy Thompson, superintendent of Kermit schools, spoke to the Monahans Lions Club at Colonial Inn about differences between U.S. and German education systems. He recently returned from a 21 day European study trip with a group of educators. Attendees included Walt Rogers and Dick Hoyer of Monahans, Rev. Terry Bouchelle, Rev. Roland Hayes of Houston, Dr. Berry Bowman of Albany GA, John Hammill, O. Walker of Grandfalls, and Colin Davis of Port Talbot South Wales.
Porfirio Garcia a 22 year old Ft Worth Pipe and Supply employee was charged with assault with intent to murder after the Saturday night stabbing of Paulo Acosta a 26 year old City Sanitation worker. Acosta was hospitalized with facial and abdominal wounds after surgery and is improving. Acosta identified the assailant to his father who filed the charges.
Ward County gardeners and orchard owners are urged to attend the Green Thumb Exposition planned for July 21. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce it will showcase home grown products with ribbons and door prizes for attendees. County 4-H girls and agents will promote the event around town next week.
Monahans Chamber of Commerce hosts the first annual Fun Tier Celebration with a reunion of Ward County old timers. Registration runs 9 to 3 at First National Bank National Room. Highlights include a 10 am historical marker unveiling at the Holman Hotel site and a golf tournament chaired by Horace Norman with a $3 entry fee. A fashion style show is set for 11:30 to 1:30 at the Colonial Inn Motel with local merchants supplying models.
The Monahans-Wickett-Pyote Board of Education hired six new teachers including Jim Sizemore Bill Petteway Bob Burchard Mrs Betty Swinford Jackie Browne and Mrs Gayla Langley and approved Louise Driskell as junior high counselor A 10 cent hourly raise for cafeteria workers was approved The board also sold a used bus to the Monahans Teen Age League for 355 bought a new station wagon from Trio Motor and named First State Bank as district depository for a two year term Routine bills were paid in July.
The Ward County Commissioners approved the purchase of the former Sinclair Oil production office property on north Highway 18 for 16000 dollars. The building and 150 by 250 foot lot will host the State Highway Patrol office and drivers license division possibly replacing County offices in the Court House Annex. The deal was arranged by Hash Realty Company for owner O J Martin of Vinita Oklahoma. The board also sought membership in Water Inc a Panhandle West Texas group planning regional water projects.
The Jaycee Carnival announces a Treasure Chest promotion with valuable prizes awarded nightly. Attend with family for entertainment while profits fund city improvements and projects.
County Chairman J L Pinkerton and State Committee Woman Mrs Pinkerton attended an Andrews County Republican meeting. Senator Henry Grover of Houston spoke, predicting GOP gains in 1968 and noting liberals’ rising influence in Texas politics. The Pinkertons praised the A group’s activities.
