Four federal agencies reserve almost 1.5 million dollars for a multi use neighborhood center in South Dallas and related projects. HUD provides 1,182,932 for the center and 103,283 for park development, HEW contributes 27,000 for vocational rehabilitation, and two OEO planning grants up to 160,000. Construction could begin mid August with two thirds funded by federal grants and one third by a city bond vote. The project targets the 8 square mile code enforcement area around Forest Avenue to South Central Expressway under Johnson's urban poverty program. Dallas is among 14 cities approved for neighborhood center development.

Ward County presents the third annual Ward County Junior Rodeo at the County Coliseum from July 6 to July 8. The event, sanctioned by A J R A and sponsored by the Ward County Riding and Roping Club, features barrel racing pole bending and 10 other events with nightly shows at 8. A gala parade starts the opening day at 3 30 p m. A barbecue will be held July 6 with tickets at the sites. D R Bob Crider leads the club formed in 1962 by S G Pittman and club riders assist in missing persons hunts and disaster responses. Uniforms are blue and white. Miss Linda Myers is queen with Eva Myers as a new sweetheart candidate.

The chamber sponsors a blowout with a 7 a.m. fly in breakfast and 11 a.m. downtown parade in Kermit featuring sheriffs and saddle clubs, a Winkler County Park barbecue, and a Hawk Missile Unit display from Fort Bliss. Pecos hosts the world’s oldest rodeo nightly through July 4 with a grand entry after a four day West Texas Trail Riders event. Odessa features a Independence Day Festival with Beauty Pageants, parade, fireworks, and carnival on Coliseum grounds. Fireworks at Sandhills State Park sponsored by the Monahans Volunteer Fire Department will light the dunes at dusk with park safety rules in effect and fifty cent car-entry fees. The district saw its heaviest rain of the year on Friday with Mona had 1.2 inches, Wickett 1.5, Thorntonville over an inch, Grand Falls a trace, and the official 1.20 inches from Mona Hans Weather Observer. The 1967 total reached 2.33 inches, surpassing six months of rainfall.
