Locals oppose PBRPC Changes in Midland vote
Bylaw changes to the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission passed with little opposition in Midland on Wednesday. Opposition came from Monahans representative Chuck Wilson Chester Taggart and a Kermit representative. Changes would add three more directors from area cities and one each from soil and water districts school and college districts and health districts. City Manager Jack Forga said the amendments could sway votes toward Midland and Odessa. Wilson questioned clarity of intent and future changes. Judge Taggart expressed mixed feelings about the commission and local government status. Executive Director Ernie Crawford introduced Koepsell Girard & Associates to outline a three year work study.

David Clyde Presley 17 son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Presley 1705 Bryan was chosen as Monahans Optimist Club Young Texan of the Month for January. He maintains a three year high school average of 83.23 and is active in sports from junior high to senior year. He starred as top pass receiver in District 2 3A and earned first team honors on the Lubbock Avalanche Journal All South Plains Team and second team on the San Angelo Standard Times All West Texas Team. He will run the 100 yard dash 220 dash and 440 relay in track this year and has won awards in baseball and track. He is active in Future Teachers of America A Cappella Choir and was nominated for Most Handsome Junior Class Coronation King and Mr MHS. He attends First Baptist Church and sings in the church choir.

Pyote Blast Kills One Injures Three
One man died and three were injured Friday near Pyote when gas fumes in a treating tower exploded during cleaning. Verlen Brewer of Odessa died about two and a half hours after arrival at Medical Center in Odessa. his legs were blown off. Ronald Spears, 24, suffered hip and leg injuries and was treated at Odessa Medical Center along with Billy Brewer, 43, who was treated and released.

Monahans Man Hurt In Wreck
Jay B. Erwin of 303 S James suffered head injuries when his truck struck a bridge about 25 miles south of Monahans. He was described in serious condition at Ward Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Odessa Medical Center. He remained in intensive care but listed as satisfactory.

Designs Equipment For Deepest Well At Fort Stockton
Schlumberger teams from Monahans spent 41 working hours reaching the deepest hole near Fort Stockton, drilling 549 days to 28 500 feet. The company developed new tech to endure 500 degree heat, with heavy duty Teflon cable rated to the same. Five tests were run including Gamaray Sonic Induction Log Density and a Cariband readout providing complex carbonate reserves analysis. Completion is still underway.
