A community in Monahans rallies for the local high school Lobos vs Kermit Wildcats basketball game urging strong team effort. News includes Hal Creel returning to D&B Meats, a new 80 room Ramada Inn project, and a 2.5 acre Standard Oil site for a service station with a large dining hall and pool.
Electrical wiring in a clothes dryer caused a small fire at 913 N. Betty A blaze damaged nothing beyond paint in a dumpster on Dempster An underpass on State 18 saw a car fire with no damage reported There were entries for Monday and Tuesday evenings with no injuries listed.
Friday is the signup deadline for a 15 week bookkeeping course taught by high school teacher Ed Williams. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, the course costs 15 dollars plus textbooks. Registration blanks are available at area banks and the Chamber office. Classes start January 25.
The Commissioners Court met in special session and accepted an 18 750.00 dollar bid from Treanor Equipment Company of Odessa for a new tractor for Precinct 1.
County Tax Collector Arthur Bowman announced payment sub stations for poll taxes in Grandfalls Pyote and Barstow. In Grandfalls payments are at Harp Auto Store in Pyote at the home of Mrs. W L Bearden and in Barstow at the Water District Office.
E. H. Anderson of Monahans Assembly of God says Johnsons proposed federal education aid contradicts Supreme Court rulings on church state separation and praises Bible reading in public schools while opposing scripture interpretation by teachers. Lincoln Day Dinner planned for Feb 12 with Jack Moore presiding.
Larry Milner Texas Industrial Commission West Texas coordinator visited Mona han s Tuesday. He heard a pep talk on Pyote Air Force Station facilities, toured Mona han s industrial site, and promised to pursue PAFS with the Industrial Commission and UT Board of Regents. He agreed to try to locate industry or a trade school at PAFS.
Services were held in Burnet for Luther Jones a retired chemical worker and former Monahans resident. He died at his home Monday after living in Burnet for five years and in the area for 25 years. Survivors include son C B Jones and sister Mrs Virgil Harris.
Ward Memorial Hospital reported Mr and Mrs William Card III to be discharged after recovering from injuries from an auto accident 12 miles east of town Sunday. John C Dunagan also listed as satisfactory though still in hospital as one of three involved in the wreck.
Signs at the Interstate 20 State Highway 18 interchange south of Monahans indicate two motels under construction. The Ramada site is south of the overpass and the Rodeway Inn site is north of it on the west side of State Highway 18.
At a Tuesday board meeting Monahans Chamber of Commerce named L M Hudgins new president and elected Charles Taggart vice president and Charles Baker treasurer. Retiring president H J Asher and outgoing VP Roland Maxwell exit the board. An upcoming annual meeting with speaker Bob Murphey of Nacogdoches highlights awards for outstanding citizen and a banner year plan is announced. Mayor Williams calls a special city council session to review past building activity and future construction.
Williams, who has served on the City Council and was Mayor Pro Tem at Ralph Barnes death, announces candidacy for a full term as Monahans mayor. The April election will also consider water and sewer extensions and financing to meet growth and a planned bond issue.
Dr Roberto Pedraza president of Lydia Patterson Institute El Paso will be guest preacher at the 10 55 a m service Sunday on the theme Our Latin American Neighbors Rev David A Shaw notes the School of Missions extension and the institute choir of 20 voices will be featured with the event.
County Judge Toon Estes stated the County Criminal Court would likely continue through the week with only one early case needing a verdict, an acquittal being the sole decision expected soon.
A meeting of the Monahans Little League is set for Monday at 7 p m in the Community Center Building. Fathers of Little League players are especially urged to attend, and all interested persons are invited.
Funeral services for the Rev J C McKenzie father of Mrs Alf Edwards will be held at Blackburn Shaws in Amarillo Saturday. The retired Baptist minister passed away in Amarillo last night.
Grady Weller county coordinator has called a Ward County Civil Defense meeting for 7 30 tonight in the Commissioners Court Room at the Courthouse. All interested citizens are urged to attend.
A pruning demonstration and discussion on proper care of fruit and nut trees is set for the Hal Adams home in the Farr Addition at 5 o clock Friday afternoon. County Agent Johnny Harrison will perform the pruning and lead the discussion. All interested persons are welcome.
A list of 65 prospective petit jurors is summoned for duty Monday for a district court session hearing a child custody case transferred from Loving County.
The annual March of Dimes Dance is set for Saturday night at the VFW Hall on East Highway 80 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission is $3 per couple, with the VFW Auxiliary hoping for generous donations. Vaughn Brinson and the Westernaires provide the music.
