Two gentlemen review the new Chamber of Commerce tourist brochure. Congrats to the Chamber Tourism Committee for the work and time spent producing the brochure. The effort should attract visitors and benefit the town.
Monahans residents recall J H Starley long tied to Pecos as he departs the 143rd District judgeship this December. He once led the Monahans Jaycees and is described as a lifelong Pecos man who previously lived here.
El Paso businessman and lawyer George McAlmon, a Democrat, announced his candidacy for Congress from Texas 16th District. He pledged a people to people approach to learn district concerns and bring them to Washington, criticizing the current office for unfulfilled promises.
After five years of work the Monahans Housing Authority begins accepting applications at 8 a.m. for 34 low rent units. Executive director Mrs. Lucille King will meet prospective tenants in Room 11 of the County Annex. The project, started in 1971, includes one to four bedroom homes with ten one bedroom units reserved for elderly or handicapped residents.
City officials prepare to revisit solid waste collection as the top agenda item. In December 1975 City Manager Jack Forga proposed a new approach to Monahans trash service and presented plans at the previous meeting to do away with trash cans.
Monahans School Board plans a Tuesday meeting with elections for a teacher and administrative staff. Reports cover construction projects replacing cans with large containers, estimated at 229750 dollars with savings to repay in 6.5 years. The agenda also lists gas cost adjustment, liability insurance, firefighting contract with Ward County, a zone change at 1301 S Alice, and a tax roll adjustment.
Dr Tzzy-Wen Hsu of Odessa was admitted to the regular staff by the Hospital Board. Dr Robert Moers of Lubbock will serve weekend emergency duty Friday through Monday. Eight other physicians were reappointed to associate and consulting staff. Administrator Bob Hill retained post amid a 272.8 percent rise in professional liability insurance costs and a 10 percent employee raise. December results show a $1,748.72 surplus with 159 admissions and 404 ER visits.
Figures from the Soil Conservation Service show Monahans with 13.28 inches of rain in 1975, above monthly averages but far below 1974. The year featured a varied pattern from January’s damp start to December’s brief showers, and ended drier than 1974 with hopes for a drier 1976.
The Monahans Colonial Inn hosts the West Texas Restaurant Association meeting tomorrow night with about 80 guests expected. L C Spaugh and association officials plan a meal program and business session, the first of its kind in Monahans.
Five Monahans civic groups will lead a project to renovate the Chamber of Commerce building inside and out. Chamber Manager Joe Corby said a committee was formed after a meeting last week to study the planned renovation. The Desert Sands Garden Club sponsored the session with the Chamber board.
