Postmaster Reports Postal Revenue Rise in Monahans

Ralph Chaney notes 1964 gross receipts of 147,384 for Monahans post office rising to 150,991.82 in the last year, a 2.4 percent gain. Plans urge strong turnout for the Sandhills Relays on April 2 with local hopes for a big community event. Bob Byrd and Jo Ann Byrd relocate to Wichita Falls after Bob lands a good job. Jo Ann had been secretary in Murray Howze’s office. many Monahans friends remain.

District Court Opens with Criminal Trials Today

The district court begins with several criminal cases on the docket including assault with intent to murder and arson indictments against Charles Hardin and Eugene Summers. Charges of fondling are set for Dewey James Francisco and Wilbourne Dale Ivie. Civil matters follow tomorrow with multiple damage and compensation suits, including a second trial for Robert P. Coley vs William Card III.

Red Cross Sets March Fund Drive for Ward County

Ward County Chapter of the American Red Cross plans a March fund drive to support the annual budget. Executive secretary Mrs. W. H. Helen Woods and chairman Charles Cunningham urge contributions sent to 1100 S. James. This marks the first standalone drive in years, as response previously came through the Community Chest. The chapter served Red Cross cases across Ward County communities.

Yates Still Only One In Council Race

Mrs. Margie Wilson stated late Friday afternoon that incumbent Councilman J T Yates was the sole announced candidate. Filing deadline for the April 5 election is Saturday March 5 with three two year terms and one one year seat to be filled.

Monahans Jaycees announce DSA and Boss Award Night

The Monahans Jaycees plan the Annual Distinguished Service Award and Boss of the Year Banquet on April 8 with Senator Pete Snelson as principal speaker. Nominations for both awards are due by March 25 and can come from any community member or employee.

Ward Memorial Earns Maximum Joint Commission Accreditation

Ward Memorial Hospital has been granted a three year accreditation by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, the maximum term. The hospital, the only facility of its size in the area to be accredited, must meet strict standards for patient care, facilities, and staff. Administrator Norman Loftin credited the governing board, medical staff, and all employees for the achievement.

Giant Parade to Open 27th Ward County Livestock Show

Grand Marshal L P Osborn will lead a color guard from Fort Bliss El Paso in the Ward County Riding and Roping Club parade through downtown Monahans Wednesday at 5 p m. Sheriff posses from nearby towns Odessa and Andrews have joined the gala procession with Monahans High School Hudler Junior High bands, army unit, floats and riders. Trophies awarded for best mounted groups and for top floats with first second and third places. The 27th Livestock Show runs Thursday through Saturday, with the parade preceding opening ceremonies.

No Big Rush For School Board Spots

No one filed for the County School Board and only one entered the Grandfalls Royalty race by Friday afternoon. Filing with the County Judge closes March 2, with two County Board seats—Precinct 4 and county at large—up for election. In Grandfalls Royalty, W. A. Bill Tipton seeks re election while Bill Derrick’s term also expires.

Campus Talent 66 Slated For Local TV

Students from twelve Texas colleges will appear on Campus Talent 66 an hour long program taped on multiple campuses. It will air on KVKM twice March 4 and March 6 with fifteen acts ranging from ballad singers to a contemporary instrumental quartet.

Wickett Names Mayor and Three Councilmen Election

Wickett voters will name a mayor and three councilmen in an election set for April 5. Candidates must file with the City Secretary by March 11. Incumbents W C Moore Olaf Luckie Alvie Pardue and James Cox are finishing terms with no filings by mid afternoon Friday.

Free Voter Registration Set To Start Thursday

Tax Collector Arthur Bowman said registration would begin in 15 days by Thursday though official materials from the Secretary of State have not yet arrived. He noted those who passed their 61st birthday before January would not have to register unless the law requires it, in which case notice would be issued immediately.

North Texas State Band to Play Monahans Concert

The 90 piece North Texas State University band from Den ton will perform at Monahans High School auditorium on Sunday March 6, sponsored by the Big Green Band. Tickets are sold by MHS band members as Dan Gibbs directs the event.

Council To Discuss Cable TV Agenda At City Hall

City Council meets today at 2 p m in City Hall to revisit items tabled at the last meeting. Reconsiderations include taxi fare increases water well leasing and an ordinance regulating Community Antenna Television.

Fire incidents reported in Wickett and at 207 S Eva

A summary of local fire events notes a warehouse fire in Wickett on February 19 and a grass fire at 207 South Eva on February 24. Authorities responded to both incidents and fire crews contained the blazes. No injuries are reported.
