Joe Vandiver, longtime manager of Wacker's Stores in Monahans, was promoted to supervisor of the West Texas District. He will base his headquarters in Monahans with offices at Wacker's No. 1. Dal ton Knox will replace him as local manager. Knox is from Big Spring, married, and a father of a daughter.
The Swabbers became the fifth team of the Monahans Pony League Association at a Monday night directors meeting. They will be sponsored by White Well Service, with two games weekly and a bid process for uniforms next meeting. Ralph Chaney said the new team gets first draft choice from the Little League.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday will be Dollar Days in Mona Hans. Dollar Day ads featuring merchants specials will appear in Monday's issue of the News. Merchants are reminded to have their copy ready promptly.
Coach Bill Willines and the District champions the Lobos depart at 3 PM for the Region I basketball tournament in Lubbock. Ten players travel with team manager John Ratliff. They open against Brownwood, 2 PM Friday, with Lamesa and Dumas in later games. winners Saturday vie for a state berth in Austin.
At their Monday meeting the commissioners heard Judge Estes read a three day and night invitation to the West Texas County Judge and Commissioners Convention in San Angelo in early March. Judge Estes will make reservations for those planning to attend. The board approved a 60 day loan of 5000 from Road and Bridge General Fund to precinct 4 and authorized 163 in expenses for County Agent and 4 H Club to attend El Paso and San Antonio Livestock Exhibitions. Sheriff McNerlin requested deputies salaries be adjusted to 375 monthly for Bob Hundley and Bill Spurgers plus 75 monthly travel allowance.
C of C manager Parris Wheatley reminded members that today is the deadline to return banquet tickets for the March 3 event. The annual banquet will be at 7:30 p m in the Tatum School cafeteria with a short program and a good meal, urging all members to attend.
The Texas Permian Historical Society will hold its second annual meeting February 28 from 3 to 5 PM in the Odessa College Student Union Building. Paul Patterson will speak. four directors to be elected. Membership recruitment urged. May meeting planned in Monahans with local history programs.
City council signals willingness to lease airport land to a small aircraft maker moving from Fort Worth to a West Texas site. Verbal consent given to Chamber of Commerce manager Parris Wheatley, with terms to be worked out. Company needs a small runway and temporary housing. county offers Cow barns for interim use.
Three members are to be named to the Pyote Independent School District Board of Trustees in an election set for April 2, announced today by Supt. Wright Chrane. The notice outlines nonpartisan ballots and candidate eligibility details for the local district.
Earl Earp today authorized the News to announce his candidacy for County Attorney in Ward County. He states the office is big business with about 200 misdemeanor cases on the docket and pledges full time service, cooperation with merchants law officers grand juries schools churches and service groups to combat petty swindling juvenile delinquency. He notes his UT Law School degree and past service as city attorney. Continued on page eight.
Funeral services for R C Wilson 53 of Monahans will be held at Shilo Baptist Church at 3 p m today with Rev L H Egratt officiating Interment in Kernes Cemetery He died Tuesday morning in Ward Memorial Hospital He was a janitor in Center Barber Shop and a 1942 arrival to Monahans Born in Kernel October 15 1906 married to Flossie Davis in December 1951 at San Angelo Survivors include his wife one daughter Mae Pearl Wilson of Lubbock one step daughter Mrs Flossie Bernice Stidham one half brother Blue Bryant Monahans and brothers Rev C W Wilson Lubbock and Jim Wilson Hubbard City
Jim Stephens spoke to about 280 at the County Coliseum for the annual Blue and Gold Banquet. Dr. A. J. Barnett presented Pack Charter for 1960 to R. B. McGowen Jr. Kiwanis president. Dinner featured fried chicken and desserts with milk by Gandy's Dairy.
Monahans Wickett ISD hosts 6 30 to 9 30 p m Monday at the High School Auditorium drawing about 3 000 attendees last year and more expected this year as Public School Week runs February 29 to March 4. Superintendent Wesley Martin invites all parents to visit during school hours. Exhibits span English biology commercial booths and student projects from all grades including a Queen Elizabeth I doll replica, a functioning catapult, prehistoric scenes and bird and mammal displays. A Gensler display offers Mother Goose and fantasy elements while other displays cover colonial costumes crafts health and science topics.
Monahans city council ordered Sam Carter not to shoot dogs except in emergencies. Citizens reported pets being slain. Mrs. Tate testified her dog was shot and wounded February 16. Carter admitted picking up 17 other dogs that night and found two dead near Tate’s home. City Manager Morris Howard noted use of a .22 pistol and urged enforcement of tagging licensing and muzzling for loose dogs.
In Abilene an oilman sues for about 4000 with a cross action for 6000 from Meacham over second hand 16 inch pipe used in a Bell County water well. Meacham claims pipe defects forced disposal and adds damages from well completion. Duffy says pipe was suitable and issues stem from user practices. Jury to hear final instructions after testimony concluded around 3 15 and judge set to charge at 4 30 with a decision expected tonight.
Temperatures in Monahans plunged to an all season low of 11 degrees with 8 a.m. reading at 12 and a light dry snow blanket over Ward County. The snow, described as pretty and not wet, measured only 0.03 inch, fell from 4 a.m. to late afternoon, left about 1.5 inches on the ground, and caused one minor icy road accident.
Grandfalls Royalty Independent School District voters will name two board members in an election on April 2. Incumbents Bill Tipton and Dick Hamm seek re election. Prospective candidates must file with the County Judge by March. Voting sites are Grandfalls High School and Royalty Girl Scout Hut from 8 am to 7 pm.
A 21 year old Black man identified as Willie Threat tried to rob the Big Liquor Store at about 9 p.m. He brandished a public safety item, forced owner Charlie Key to back room, and tied him up before a customer entered. Key fired, hitting Threat twice in the arm. one bullet went through a wall. Threat was hospitalized at Ward Memorial. charges expected.
Mrs. Gladys Shipley owner of S S Grocery sues Monahans city for 16 500 in two counts claiming August sewer backup caused permanent damage to her building and 1 500 for repairs. City Councilmen were notified Monday and the case may be heard in the 143rd District Court in several months. Attorney Murray Howze represents S S.
Monahans Pony League seeks bids from sporting goods firms and others for uniforms and equipment for the coming year. Bids are due at a meeting at 8 pm Monday at the Hickory House. For item lists call Ralph Chaney at the Post Office or Harold Kirby at Kirby Electric.
Participants in the Who's Who contest must leave entries by 4 o clock Friday afternoon at Cone Jewelry Montie's Boot and Shoe Shop or Kidd's Gift and Hobby Shop. Watch Monday's paper for clues on identifying him and a new contest starting Monday if he is not identified by Friday.
