The first issue of Texas Today profiles Governor Ramsey and the commission's people oriented view. Editors note four staffers face a 32 page bi monthly task and mention a group of six month hibernators who produced a 100 page Oil and Gas Division report.
The City Council ordered a mayor and two council seats on April 2 from 7 am to 7 pm at City Hall. Lathan Walker appointed election judge with an assistant and five clerks to be named. Mayor Hoyer seeks re election as terms of two council members expire. The EMT course through UTPB and Odessa College was noted for police and fire training credits. A 211.28 tax roll adjustment was made to honor over 65 exemptions. Joe Vandiver to replace Mitch pending acceptance.
The February Senior Citizen Luncheon will be Monday at noon at the Senior Citizen Center 205 East Fourth Street with a George Washington Birthday theme. The Ensemble of Monahans High School will perform, and meals are funded by Texas Savings and Loan. Door prizes are donated by local churches and stores.
A fierce sandstorm swept West Texas from El Paso to the Panhandle with gusts up to 65 mph and winds over 100 mph in Guadalupe Pass. Trees toppled, outbuildings collapsed, and eight injuries occurred at a Pecos Balmorhea construction site. The Pecos Balmorhea highway closed due to zero visibility as forecasts expect continued wind through Thursday.
The Grandfalls City Council ordered an election to choose a mayor and two council members. Mayor pro tem W. O. Walker has filed for mayor while Al Acosta seeks re election. No candidate had filed for the remaining council seat by noon Wednesday.
The 38th annual Ward County Livestock Show starts with a Friday Ranch Breakfast at the Community Center from 6 to 8:30 am offering steak, gravy, biscuits, and beverages for 2.50 adults and 1.50 children. Tickets are available in advance from Adult 4-H lenders or at local banks or the Extension office. An exhibition of top horses follows on Saturday.
A community meeting is set for Tuesday March 1 at 7 30 p m in the Community Center to discuss Ward County access to services offered by the Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission MH MR Alcoholic or Drug Abuse and Physical Therapy. Bob Dixon will answer questions and outline options while local efforts rely on Jaycees and broad community backing. The Ward County 4 H Horse Show follows with multi category events and awards at the Ward County Arena.
Texas Electric Service Co warns kite flyers of dangers near power lines. Manager Bill Griffin urges dry non metallic string and cautions against using any metallic or wired string. If a kite entangles in wires, call the company for retrieval.
