A nostalgic tour lists everyday inventions that built fortunes through ideas and work. Ballpoint pens, zippers, disposable diapers, cellophane, Scotch tape and other items are cited as examples of products that emerged from creativity, research, and timing, changing daily life.
District Court wrapped a busy Civil Jury session with one verdict for the plaintiff in Vaughn v Wilson Supply amounting to 30000. Settlements included A O Odell v Elton P Pritchard and a Homer C Cole v Midwestern damage case. Continued matters include W H Orr v White Well Service and Charles C Patton v Home Indemnity.
Gerald Watson of Pan American Petroleum adds his name to the local school board slate while A L Chaney files for the Grandfalls Royalty board. March 1 is the filing deadline for the April 1 election. Existing candidates include Mrs. Bill R Parks and incumbent L B Jolley. Grandfalls will fill three seats with Chaney joining E H Cox and Bill Brooks.
Six weeks tests persist at Monahans schools marking the end of the first six weeks in the new semester which started in January. English and electives were tested Tuesday and Wednesday covered science and social science with today set aside for math and electives.
Weather observer John Rogers reports daily temperatures from Monday February 20 to Thursday February 23. The year totals show 0 inches of rainfall.
The First Ward County grand jury returned 23 true bills naming seventeen individuals in thefts including cattle theft, burglaries, swindling with worthless checks, and a habitual criminal charge. Named defendants include Cipriano Gonzalez, John R. O Callaghan, Leroy Gene Hicks, Cecil Bennett Roberts, Theodore Hoffstetler, Edward Lee Bailey, and others.
Downtown merchants circulate petitions for a 90 day trial ban on meters and will present the item to the City Council. Thirty five signatures are reported by Wednesday afternoon. A two hour limit is proposed with enforcement left to the city. The merchants pledge not to park in controlled areas and to bar employee parking. They argue meters depress business and note other towns have eliminated meters successfully.
School figures compare Monahans Wickett Pyote and area towns with Monahans. George Callender notes district costs about 9 000 dollars per school day and 1 000 per hour with a 1 700 dollar budget. Monahans costs 442.65 per pupil yearly versus 478.92 in Kermit and 1 008.91 in Grandfalls. Ward County district has 275 pupils. Lion Walt Roeber announces 25th anniversary dinner February 25 at 7 01 p.m.
Larry Mosley son of Mr and Mrs Eddie Mosley has been named Mr GRHS for 1967 He has been band manager for four years participates in basketball and track and was Mr Personality in 1965 The Miss GRHS title went to Rhonda Cox daughter of Mr and Mrs T J Cox of Royalty Rhonda has been Band Sweetheart and a majorette and participates in basketball and volleyball
Henry Treadaway won third place in the Toastmasters District 44 Speech Contest held in Midland on Feb. 18. Seven clubs participated including Midland five, Odessa, and Sandhills Toastmasters of Monahans. Treadaway spoke titled Striking Out and cited Einstein Edison and Babe Ruth as examples. Sandhills members Ray Laird and Gordon Walker accompanied him. Autry Stephens joined Sandhills at Monday noon meeting at Colonial Inn.
Willard Paine elected chairman of the Abilene Christian College Board of Trustees succeeding B. Sherrod. He is the first alumnus to hold the post after 11 years on the board. Charles Chuck Wilson named Mona han city chairman for the Community Gifts campaign supporting a 25.7 million development program. Wilson, ACC alumnus and Southern Union Gas local manager, will lead volunteers in Monahans when the campaign starts.
City officials host a regional gathering honoring the 1967 Monahans High School graduates. Dr E L Skiles of Abilene will speak to students and guests at 7 pm with Malcolm Grainger directing arrangements. The theme This is My Country features patriotic music and a class prophecy reading.
Residents may donate surplus plants to West Texas Children’s Home. A fulltime nurseryman will visit homes to transplant shrubs. Call Mrs. S. C. Hanks or Mrs. Conrad Dunagan to arrange pickups. Roses ivy crepe myrtle and other suited plants welcomed for landscaping program.
The Dale Carnegie Course instructed by Mel Odom starts tonight at 7 37 in the National Room. Forty have enrolled per Lions Club sponsorship with free first session for others interested in the self help lessons.
More than 250 viewers packed Tatum Cafetorium to see a Texas Parks and Wildlife program by Leroy Williamson. The 45 minute slides and tapes showcased Menahans Sandhills Park and West Texas scenes. R J Hoyer of the Sandhills Museum Association introduced staff and urged support through dues and donations.
Twenty eight years of progress will be the theme for this years Ward County 4 H Livestock Show. The three day event runs March 2 3 and 4 at the Coliseum grounds with hundreds of animals groomed for showing and judging. Auctions on the second afternoon will be presided over by Col Bob Stock as young stock raisers anticipate high cash proceeds.
Region IV meeting of the Texas Municipal League will draw municipal officials from the surrounding area to Colonial Inn at 6 30 p m with as many as 150 registered The social hour features State Senator H J Blanchard from Austin where he serves in the 60th Legislature representing the 28th District Blanchard will discuss local legislative issues including oil and gas game and fish water conservation and roads A regional TML officer presides with Pecos mayor Dr E W Schmidt Monahans mayor pro tem Jack Sharp as vice president Kermit city manager James C Morgan serves as secretary Odessa TML director E P Jock Rainsock and Monahans hosts welcome by mayor pro tem Sharp due to illness Mayor Jim Williams intended to welcome visitors and delegates.
Monahans Jaycees sponsor the Livestock Show Parade with a March 1 5 p.m. entry deadline in downtown Monahans. Joe Fields urges organizations to mail entry forms to Box 936. Many floats bands riding groups and a girls bull whip team from Odessa College plan to participate. prizes will be awarded for top three entries. The parade draw brings a large downtown crowd to kick off the livestock show.
