In Monahans a wave of dog poisonings and related complaints prompts calls to a City Council meeting. Sam Carver the dog catcher discusses challenges catching healthy dogs and the need to protect the public. A poisoning letter from a local resident recalls four loyal years with a dog and thanks Dr Stevenson for midnight efforts.
Charley Switzer asked the News to state he will not seek re election to the school board. He cites lack of time despite many calls and solicitations to run.
Cadet Sam M. D. Lange of Grandfalls was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in an announcement by Lt. Col. L. W. Sherrod, Tarleton State College Professor of Military Science. Lange, son of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Lange, is a 1958 Grandfalls Royalty High School graduate.
City Council to review the dog shooting policy after a written complaint by Mr. and Mrs. Tate that their dog was shot last Tuesday night. Dog catcher Sam Carter said he shot a stray female dog that night but not the Tates' dog. Meeting also covers butane sales within city limits, airport property lease, Country Club lease, zoning and annexation items.
Two indictments against J. C. Avary of Monahans former District Clerk for Ward County were dismissed by Judge Ralph Caton in Big Spring. Avary faced charges of misapplication of trust funds for 250 dollars on September 27 1947 and 2000 dollars on October 6 1947. The cases were moved on venue and dismissed on statute of limitations grounds following arguments by Avarys attorney and the 143rd District Attorney.
A Ward County team led by Geneva and Gene Thornton and Carey Wilson earned second place in the statewide grass judging contest at the San Antonio Live stock Show. Melissa Sutherland, Jerry Lewis and Charles Potts finished fifth. With most participants placing top 10 in individual honors, contestants studied 112 grasses legumes forbs and woody plants.
Principal George Callender found the Mona Hans Junior High School band hall broken into after a side window entry. About $8.50 was taken from a desk drawer. Police Chief John Ashcraft says two boys are suspects. the incident was discovered at 9 a.m. Saturday.
More than 90 percent of the local National Guard personnel were combat ready and present within 45 minutes after an alert at 5 a.m. Sunday. Operation Awake II tested division wide readiness of hometown units, with a similar alert conducted last year.
Monahans Pony League Association members will meet at the Hickory House at 8 p.m. to select players and decide whether to add a fifth team due to growing Little League advancement. Secretary Ralph Chaney said details of re organization for the 1960 season are nearing completion.
Directors approved opening the club on Mondays at Cliff Greenlee’s request and moved game night from Tuesday to Friday. Horace Norman will keep the Pro Shop open Mondays during peak months but not on a regular schedule yet. They discussed canned music, paid monthly bills, and authorized buying a new water pump for a well.
Electric service was suspended from 5 23 to 6 42 pm Thursday in the southeast section of Monahans after a car struck a down guy wire causing a primary power line to burn out. Manager H T Lenox of Texas Electric said only a few residences were affected in the 1200 block of S Alice.
Mrs Patricia Kelton of Mona has been named to the College Honor List at Sul Ross State College. The junior elementary education major was rated in the upper ten percent of the fall 1959 enrollment.
Monahans Chamber of Commerce reports 91 new members for 1960, part of a drive begun February 4 led by Parris Wheatley and including 37 added by Joe Farr since November. Total members reach 250 with $17,834 pledged for the year and a goal of 100 percent participation.
The Ward County Bar Association endorsed Lloyd W. Davidson for reelection to the Court of Criminal Appeals. They praised his long service as a State's Attorney and judge, calling him a friend of West Texas and the best qualified candidate in the race.
Bob Finney will discuss Use of Radioactive Tracers at a Permian Basin Water Flood Association meeting tonight at 7 o clock held at Cliff's Two.
The Master Plan Evaluation Committee meets Thursday at 7 30 p m in the new State Highway office building.
Local Monahans Lobos prepare for a Region I playoff opener in Lubbock Friday at 2 p.m. against Brownwood at Texas Tech Coliseum as coaches plan a fast break and zone defense. Floyd Hipps, 28, of Holtville was hospitalized after a knife assault outside the Blue Lantern Cafe. Billy Wilson, 32, of Monahans faces charges and bond set at 2500 dollars.
Some 25 or 30 pastors and Scout leaders from the Arrowhead District are expected at the Monahans Community Center for a Church Scout relationship conference opening at noon today. E C Hogan Jr assistant director for Protestant Service Boy Scouts will address the group and lead an open forum after lunch.
About 300 Cub Scouts, families and Kiwanis Club members attend a Blue and Gold Banquet at the Cow Palace at 7 PM. Scouting and achievement awards are presented and Kiwanis receives an official charter as sponsor. Mothers of the Scouts bring a covered dish for supper. The event moved from Tatum School cafeteria due to crowd size.
Plans announced for the annual Monahans Boy Scout Circus at the Cow Palace on April 22 at 7 30 pm. The show will feature a complete array of exhibits depicting Scout activities across all areas.
Three thousand one hundred forty three students ages six to 18 will be eligible to register for classes in the Monahans-Wickett Independent School District this September, per a January scholastic count by the Superintendent's office staff.
District Court opens at 9 on Tuesday with B A Duffy versus T D Meacham for debt. A 9:30 jury panel is required. Seven additional hearings this week include five for compensation and two for damages.
