Eight persons pled guilty to Driving While Intoxicated in Ward County Court. Six cases were dismissed for faulty complaints and several motions were granted continuances. Eight will plead again next Wednesday while thirty three jurors were drawn for potential service Feb. 22.
Keith Austin 17, son of Mr and Mrs John D Austin and Monahans High senior, was named Young Texan of the Month by the Monahans Optimist Club for academic achievement and extracurricular involvement. He has a 93.07 average, National Honor Society member for three years, Class Scholarship winner, and UIL Math Number Sense competitor. His athletic history includes wrestling champion in West Virginia and Loboes top rusher, with multi sport play and a switch to golf this year.
Dr. L B Stevenson Jr a Monahans veterinarian will hold a rabies vaccination clinic at the Wickett fire station on February 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. Vaccinations cost four dollars each. Dogs over six months should be vaccinated and city dogs must have an annual rabies immunization.
Monahans city council weighs an April election date for three council seats held by Richard White Norbon Sikes and Chuck Wilson. The meeting covers election judges park funds a $113 000 grant from the State Parks and Wildlife Commission and contract items including fire protection and airport management.

Jose Lujan of 205 St Teresa remains in satisfactory condition in Odessa Medical Center ICU with internal injuries and a fractured leg after a two car crash on Cyanosa road. His wife Aurora and two others died in the accident. Ronald Spears, injured weeks ago in an oil field explosion near Pyote, is also in satisfactory condition in Odessa ICU, having lost a leg in the blast.
Two minor injury accidents occurred in Ward County during the week. Jimmy Smith 22 of Monahans rolled a water truck while attempting a U turn in a Grandfalls Highway construction area. he was taken to Ward Memorial Hospital. Highway Patrolman Jody Fore investigated the 3:45 p.m. mishap. In Royalty another one car crash injured Dale Carter of Odessa when he lost control and flipped the vehicle. he was treated at Ward Memorial Hospital and then moved to Odessa Medical Center.
In 1973 Texas schools will switch to a three quarter system of three equal 60 day terms, with an optional fourth quarter possible but unfunded. Local Superintendent George Cullender doubts big changes for smaller districts, noting minimal impact aside from grading and admin tweaks.
