The February term grand jury convenes at 10 with 13 matters for investigation. District Judge J H Starley will empanel the grand jury, but court duties are postponed due to the judge's relative’s death. The petit jury panel is dismissed until further notice.
R. J. Dick Hoyer and B. B. Rogers filed Thursday for reelection to two year terms on Monahans City Council. An election is scheduled for April 1 to fill the expiring terms of the two councilmen and the mayor. City Secretary Margie Wilson said the filing deadline is March 4.
County Tax Collector Arthur Bowman reports about 1200 license plates sold in the first two weeks of sale noted as steady. No unusual requests for specialized plates. new tags must be displayed by April 1.
Miss Alta Reta Nicholson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Nicholson of 1404 South Allen Street, earned her silver wings as an American Airlines stewardess. She will fly from New York City after completing Fort Worth based training, listing prior work at Sanders Campbell and Company and education at Monahans High and Texas Tech.
Robert E. Hurst of Dow Chemical will address the Trans-Pecos Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers at a 7:30 p.m. dinner meeting Tuesday at the Monahans Country Club. A social hour begins at 6:30 p.m. Hurst, Distinguished Lecturer for nine months, will discuss Production Stimulation in the 1970s A New Look with focus on background technology and field activity for new well stimulation.
Thunder and showers moved through the city on Thursday night and again Friday. In the southeast, B. B. Rogers measured a bit over a quarter inch, bringing this year’s total rainfall to .27 inches when added to January’s hundredths of an inch.
The body of 19 year old Rudy Contreras was recovered about 2 PM Thursday after a small boat with Manuel Ortega capsized in Imperial Reservoir six miles south of Grandfalls. Ortega swam ashore and was treated. Contreras had been missing since the mishap as his wife and daughter waited nearby. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church in Monahans with burial in Monahans Cemetery.
Wickett City Council called an April 5 election to name three councilmen as terms of J. C. Howorth R. S. Mitchell and Bill Garrard expire. Candidates may file at the city office. The Feb 10 meeting also approved more school area stop signs and a $20 fine for offenders. The council will act on unsafe and unsightly properties by letters and possible enforcement if deadlines aren’t met.
Plans for a 1969 Youth and Its Resources Exposition Parade on March 5 in connection with the Ward County Livestock Show are underway. Industrial firms clubs and organizations are urged to call the Chamber of Commerce to enter a vehicle or decorated float. The parade begins at 3 p.m. at 401 S Dwight and moves west on Highway 80 to Betty Street then south to the high school.
The FCC approved the sale of KVKM TV Monahans to Grayson Enterprises for about 530000. Grayson owns stations in Lubbock Big Spring and Sweetwater and will satellite the Big Spring station from Monahans. The transfer targets March 1 with Jerry Wright moving to Tri Cities Broadcasters. Earl Hill named Chief Deputy in Ward County Sheriff’s Office.
A Disneyland camera crew films Monahans High School Lobo Band as town celebrates its second place in the National Disneyland Marching Band Contest of 1968. A $5000 instrument gift from Wurlitzer and Disneyland officials attend, with a big green band day and a standing room only 8 pm auditorium event. Admission is $1 adults fifty cents students. two adult tickets cover the family. Performances include Symphonic Band Concert Band Stage Band and Percussion Ensemble.
A series of small urban blazes were logged in February including a grass fire on Southrop Road on February 8, a dumpster trash fire near Wade's Café on February 13, and a car fire at 105 Main Street on February 14.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Lenora Frice said she is ready to begin seeking a replacement for Wayne Bishop, whose resignation was accepted at a special Commissioners Court session last week. No action is expected before February 24, and all county equipment stays at the central warehouse in Pyote except what is in use on the roads.
Paul Eggers told about 109 guests at the GOP Lincoln Dinner that poverty and crime are the nation’s top problems. The Wichita Falls attorney and former Texas gubernatorial candidate urged fighting crime with guts at all government levels. He emphasized a two party Texas and hinted he may run for governor again.
Union Church of Grand Falls continues a revival started yesterday and ending Thursday night. Rev J R Bunts pastor of First Methodist Monahans is evangelist and Billy Derrick leads the singing.
Four year old Ernie Whitlow remains in serious condition at Ward Memorial Hospital after severe burns to fifty percent of his lower body. He was injured when his clothes caught fire from a trash fire at his home south of Mona last Tuesday afternoon. His parents Luther and Mrs Whitlow declined blood transfusions for religious reasons. Hospital says a new armed forces developed ointment is being used in treatment.
