A bustling column recalls visits to Barnes Funeral Home and a belts search at Southern Union. The Jaycee Ettes run parties at Opportunity School for kids while the town buzzes with boom town construction. Earlene Fleming joins the gas office as a friendly new face.
Eight new families are welcomed into the community with wishes for a long and happy stay. Names listed include D. G. Jackson, James Pierson, Harshal Ridgen, Ray J. Young, Thomas J. Frazier, Howard Upchurch, Billy J. Murphree, and Billy Cliff McGrew along with their addresses.
The Monahans Jaycee Ettes prepare a Mexican Supper for 600 expected attendees at Ward County Coliseum 5 30 to 8 00. Proceeds support the Boys Club Fund Drive with tickets 1 25 for adults and 75 cents for children. Building chairman Johnny King to start work on the new two story club building at 507 E Sealy donated by George Bentley.
A ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for 3 30 this afternoon at the corner of Third and Main to signal the start of construction on the Texas Savings and Loan Association Building. Dignitaries from the city of Monahans Ward County and the Chamber of Commerce will attend.
Two candidates, including incumbent Ross Rucker, filed for the April 4 Monahans-Wickett School Board election. Opponent Gerald Watson also filed. Trustee terms for Rucker and Dr. Paul Kunstadt expire this year. Applications may be filed with Glenn Elrod at the Administration Building.
The city issued January building permits totaling 83 750 compared with 38 160 a year ago. Four new residences, eight adds and repairs, and two commercial projects accounted for most of the total. Public Works Director Jack Forga notes several permits pending for February, including school work and the Texas Savings and Loan building. Doris Ray was named City Secretary and will also serve as tax assessor collector.
Rev. E H Anderson says revival services are underway at First Assembly of God Church at 9th and Betty. Services began yesterday and will be held nightly at 7 30 except tonight with Gene Allen of San Antonio preaching. Public invited.
Kermit Yellowjackets defeated Lobo A 72 to 46 on Friday night in Kermit. Randy Jackson scored 13 and Steve Cornwell 12 for the winners. Lobo B edged their opponents 55 to 54 with Arlen Griffith pouring in 28 points.
William Estill Carriger 58 of Pyote died Sunday at his home. Services will be held Tuesday at the Methodist Church in Pyote with Rev. C. C. Gober officiating. He was a veteran born November 8 1905 in Eastland and survived by a brother Dewey Carriger and two sisters Mrs. Sam Holt and Mrs. Jack Wester. Interment in Pyote Cemetery. Barnes Funeral Home directing.
The Monahans Jaycees host the annual Distinguished Service Award and Bosses Night Banquet at 7 30 PM at the Monahans Country Club. Odessa's Jim Reese will speak. guests include Miss Laura Salomone and Miss Linda Pearce.
A joint safety meeting of Slater Transport and KWS Trucking in Wickett drew 20 attendees at Cafe Royal. J A McDonald, Slater driver of 17 years, earned a citation for accident-free service, while Slater was praised for a year without chargable accidents in 1963.
More than 100 Ward County Democrats met at the courthouse and reelected Mrs Edna Scott as chairman of the Ward County Democratic Club. Officers named were Ross Rucker vice chairman Mrs Wayne Long secretary and Mrs Joe Massey treasurer. Pete Snelson of Midland and Richard C White of El Paso spoke brief ly as plans for future meetings were discussed.
A special joint meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary is scheduled for Monday evening February 17 at 8 00 p m. at the Post Home on East Highway 80 A Boys Club representative will discuss with the group All members are urged to attend and be prompt for the talk.
Grady Kidd a local real estate dealer and former golf pro at Monahans Country Club was hospitalized Saturday after a heart attack. By Sunday he was reported to be resting comfortably.
A meeting is set for Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the Opportunity School Courthouse Annex to plan raising a 3000 dollar budget. All interested persons are invited to attend.
Dr. James H. Wright, manager of advance reactor systems for Westinghouse, was chosen by the Atomic Energy Commission to represent the United States on a peace mission to Russia beginning next month. Wright, a 1944 Abilene High School honor student, earned degrees from Texas Technological College and Pittsburgh University and has worked at Gulf Oil and Mellon Institute before joining Westinghouse. He is married to Wynelle Cope of Monahans, and the Wrights reside in Pittsburgh with their three sons.
Grandfalls Royalty Independent School District schedules April 4 for three 3 year trustee terms. Incumbents Ed Henderson Elmer Hunt and Billy Welch seek reelection. Filing with County Judge by March 4, absentee ballots via Mrs Johnnie Goldesberry March 16 to 31. Voting at Grandfalls High School and Roy alty Girl Scout Hut 8 am to 7 pm.
Funeral services for Mrs Nannie Redman Stephens 67 are set for 10 this morning at St James Episcopal Church Odessa. She died Friday night at Medical Center Hospital Odessa. Born October 16 1896 in Franklin County she is survived by a daughter Don Woods Mona hans a brother M C Little Mt Vernon two sisters Ed Fulbright and Lawrence Bunce Mt Vernon and one grandchild. Interment will follow at Monahans Cemetery with Rev Terrance Kelsay officiating.
R. M. Brackbill of Shell Oil Company Midland Division will address Mona han Rotary Club on February 19 on The Economics of the Oil Industry. Brackbill, a veteran engineer and former U S Air Force captain, has held posts across Texas Oklahoma Canada and the Hague before returning to Midland. Fellow Rotarian S J Mathews Jr will introduce him.
