A Wednesday program at the Catholic Church Parish Hall on 6th and S Ike invites locals to learn about child abuse with an engaging, enlightening and heart rending talk. The event is free. A Junior Class bake sale later Wednesday afternoon in front of Farr's aims to raise funds for a project.
Eight cases will be presented to the Ward County Grand Jury Tuesday according to District Attorney Lawrence Barber. Presentments include three aggravated assault cases, two burglary of residences, one burglary of a motor vehicle and residence, one forgery, and one incest charge. The jury will convene at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the county courthouse.
Monahans Wickett-Pyote ISD enforces federal and state rules on reduced price meals. Lunch prices for students are 70 cents high school, 60 cents junior high, 55 cents elementary, with extra milk at 7 cents. Free or reduced meals depend on income. reduced lunch is 20 cents.
The 37th Ward County Livestock Show at the county coliseum runs February 28 to March 5 with six indoor events. A Texas 4-H goat show is a highlight as film crews from Texas A&M document the event for other clubs. Wednesday features Rabbit judging with 39 entries and Capon judging at 1 30 p m with 18 signed up. Goat judging follows at 4 45 p m with 25 entrants led by judge Dr George Ahlschwede. Thursday continues with Lamb action.
The annual Monahans Band Concert and Pancake Supper sponsored by the Band Boosters takes place Friday at the County Coliseum starting at 6 p.m. This community event features the band’s performance and a pancake supper for attendees.
The first in a series of garden meetings will be held Thursday at 7 00 pm at the Community Center. County Agent Johnny Harrison notes the sessions aid home gardeners with soil nematode control soil preparation and varieties irrigation and pest handling tips from Dr George Philly Dr Bill Peevy and Charles Neeb. Co chairmen Roeber Arthur and Connie Bean invite all interested to join the event featuring local band entertainment and pancakes with tickets at the door for adults and students through grade.
Jury duty summonses for Wednesday February 18 are canceled and report is not required. District Clerk Jack Griggs announced the venue cancellation until further notice.
The Ward County Livestock Show kickoff features the Spirit of Tomorrow parade with open club and youth divisions. Prizes of 50, 25 and 10 dollars accompany a 100 dollar sweepstakes top prize. Bands from Monahans High School and Grandfalls Royalty High also scheduled. Parade on March 1 at 5 p.m. in downtown Monahans.
The shrimp project at Permian Basin power plant west of Monahans resumes with 108 immature freshwater shrimp stocked in tanks. Biologist Monta Zengerle says the trial uses fresh water only to test survival, noting earlier deaths from rapid temperature changes. A new system with temperature sensors and automated valves will soon regulate water temperatures near 90 degrees, though this remains a delicate balance for growth.
Monahans High Gym hosts a bi district girls basketball final at 7 30 p m Clint Lions from District 6 A clash with Seagraves Eagles the District 5 A champion Seagraves leads the series. Monahans Chamber of Commerce Sports Committee promotes the event with $2 adults $1 students tickets.
Wickett residents vote for city council members Saturday April 3 at Wickett City Hall. The council set the date last Thursday and named Mrs J W Howorth election judge with terms expiring for Mayor Bob Lee and several council members.
Four Ward County 4-H members finished in the top 15 at the El Paso Livestock Show last week. E J Harrison and Bridgett Buchanan earned fifth in steer judging, Liz Woods was 13th in steer. Todd Welch of Wickett placed seventh in Barrows, Scott Lindsey took 10th in lamb judging. Over 20 4-H'ers plus leaders and parents traveled to the event where 38 steers and 55 barrows and 80 lambs were shown.
Miss Tamera Roberts of Grandfalls High School won the Crocker Family Tomorrow award in 1975 alongside another senior. She earned Mills College recognition and state-level potential scholarships. Roberts, daughter of Mr. Daniel Roberts, excelled in basketball, band, cheerleading, and Homemakers activities, serving as officer each year.
Sarina Roark of Monahans praises her team and vows offense as the Almost Anything Goes squad prepares to face Pecos Eagles and Fort Stockton Panthers in March. She boasted about scoring and the Lobos in Teddy Downs while fans anticipate the March 13-14 clash.
