Ward County Commissioners refused a $2,000 federal library grant offered by the Texas State Library Field Service Division, noting its federal nature. The Monahans Boys Club announces new officers with Bob Avary as president and Mrs. Edgar Sprinkle as vice president. Barbara Koski becomes secretary and J. C. Newland serves as treasurer. Avary says funds from the United Fund have paid all bills and a small operating fund exists for upcoming needs.
City Council wrapped up gas rate talks with several actions. DeClera pipeline project approved from near 2nd and Eva to connect northward. Gulf pipeline routing set along Janice Street to 19th.
The Ice brothers Charles Tony and Jeff placed second in the sheep breeding class at the El Paso International Livestock Show. They showed two Hampshire breeding sheep and six weathers, marking their fourth year exhibiting with planned entries at San Angelo and Houston.

Henry Treadaway will represent the Monahans Toastmasters Club at an area meeting in Midland next week to compete for an award with his prepared speech Dont Strike Out. He presented the final version to the local club Monday at Colonial Inn. Gordon Walker praised Thomas Jefferson while Wesley Box was named best speaker on table topics. H. C. Kimbrough joined the club as a new member with guests from Midland and Odessa.
Mrs W M Weed was treated for burns and released from Ward Memorial after a late day house fire. The fire damaged her home and she sustained injuries while residents escaped.
At a Monahans City Council meeting tempers flared briefly over Southern Union Gas rate hike plans affecting Pecos Wickett Wink and Monahans. Councilors debated compromise as Dallas officials defended the 17 percent increase and warned a Railroad Commission inquiry could cost up to 30000 dollars.
Monahans Lions Club offers a 14 week Dale Carnegie course with classes to begin in March. Instructor is Mel Odom of El Paso and the tentative meeting place is the National Room at First National Bank. Lions president Walt Roeber urges signups by the first Tuesday in March and lists the contact WI 3-2865.
Monahans High School plans a Coronation of the King and Queen of Hearts at 8 p.m. in the auditorium, followed by a dance in the gym from 9 to 12. The royal couple will be announced at the crowning ceremony. Tickets are sold by students, with the class raising the most funds winning the crown.
A total of 3870 registration certificates were issued to Ward County voters prior to the January 31 deadline. About 750 residents over 69 were not required to register. Precinct 2 has 2434 registrations or 63 percent of the county total, with Precincts 1, 3, and 4 reporting 374, 503, and 559 registrants respectively.
The Monahans Jaycees sponsor a Battle of the Bands at 8 p m on February 25 at the County Coliseum, running to midnight. Competing are the Believers and Mark IV, with all proceeds benefiting Monahans High Distributive Education Class.
