The Hound praises Bill Mitchell for his long service on community projects in Monahans and his cheerful spirit. The piece notes the honor awarded Monday night as an incentive for continued work and highlights the value of public service to the town.
Ward County Commissioners set the tax levy at 1.15 dollars and named election judges and assistants for 1961 at their regular meeting. The 80 cent statutory rate plus 35 cent bond retirement levy is unchanged. Appointments include eight precinct teams and a separate absentee ballot canvassing board. They approved a 1500 dollar livestock show contribution, named First National Bank as 1961 depository, and accepted a subdivision plat for Western Heights and Cabot Company property at Wickett.
Monahans officials move to advertise for bids on an overlay and paving project covering about 32 city blocks at a near 40000 cost. Streets listed include Fourth between Alice and Gary and South Gary segments. Engineering work will precede paving on South Allen and South Faye to handle flood runoff.
St Paul Lutheran Church in Monahans announces special Lenten services begin tonight and continue each Thursday at 7 30 p m until Easter. Services are held at 150 South Main Street.
The Mona Hans-Wickett Independent School Board set an April 1 election date for two board seats with a March 1 5 p.m. filing deadline. Regular terms of J Ross Rucker and Dr Paul Konstadt expire election day, with no filings yet. The district plans a distributive education survey with the Chamber of Commerce and re-elected nine administrative personnel for 1961 62. A 8472 11 special education building cost was reported, and a district dinner for CP T representatives is set for April 19 ahead of the April 20 21 conference in Mona hans. Bills totaling 15789 81 were approved for payment.
Blue Haven Cafe a well known colored night spot in Monahans suffered another break in on Monday night. Thieves stole $30 to $35 in nickels dimes and quarters from the juke box and took three cases of beer. Entry gained through a northwest window. The cafe had last been broken into January 14 with $12 taken from the juke box and one case of beer.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. for Dr Benjamin R Miller Mona Hans naturopath who died suddenly at his home 310 West Third Rites were at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with burial at Cleveland Oklahoma Barnes Funeral Home in charge He helped form the Latter Day Saints church in Mona Hans and other West Texas towns Born January 5 1887 in LeMars Iowa he lived in Mona Hans about 25 years Survivors include his wife three children Helen Dochstader Ruth White both of Downey California and Louis Williams of Montebello California and two stepchildren
Preliminary plans for the Ward County Livestock Show parade in Monahans were announced by Co-Chairmen Mrs. J. T. Mounce and Mrs. Gladys Shipley. The parade on Wednesday March 1 begins at 5 p.m. with the theme Progress through the Years and ribbons for the top floats and individuals. Contacts for entries are Mrs. Mounce and Mrs. Shipley.
A teen-age dance will be held Friday night from 8 to 12 at Monahans Youth Center with music by Max Haworth and the Clefs of Monahans. Admission is 1 dollar per person and dress code calls for dresses for girls and dress trousers or slacks for boys. all teenagers invited.
Ward County 4-H Club grass judging teams head to San Antonio for the grass judging contest. Travelers include Gene and Genera Thornton and Charles Potts of Grand Falls, Carey Wilson of Pyote, and Cappy Peer, Brice Fowler, Tommy Harrison, Joe Middleton, Jimmy Speed, and Vicki Yates of Monahans. Accompanying adults are Mrs. Bluford Thornton, leader and coach, T. W. Peer, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Yates, and County Agent Johnny Harrison.
Monahans and Ward County will be showcased in the March issue of Drill Bit Magazine highlighting growth as an oil center and local facilities. The edition includes three Monahans articles on history recreation and waterflood association aims with a TV program The Monahans Story airing on KVKM TV at 9 30 pm.
A 14 year old Monahans boy Keith Bailey suffered a slight brain concussion and bruises to the arm shoulder and leg when his motor scooter went out of control at the million barrel tank east of town. He was taken to the hospital resting well the day after the 5 p.m. accident. Jerry Thurman transported Bailey home and returned to recover the scooter.
Ray B. Moore 51 died Tuesday at Ward Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Levi Price officiating. Burial in Monahans Cemetery. Barnes Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include wife R B Moore Mona ha ns two brothers a sister mother two children and two grandchildren.
Monahans High School hosts the Points-For-Polio basketball event with the MHS Lobos facing Pecos Eagles. Local firms pledge money per Lobo point to aid March of Dimes with proceeds directed to community fundraising. The event features a 6:30 p m B squad game followed by the main contest at 8 p m.
Bill Mitchell 34, KVKM Radio and TV commercial manager and sports director, received Monahans Junior Chamber of Commerce 1960 Outstanding Young Man of the Year honors at the annual Distinguished Service Award banquet. Mitchell, born Mount Vernon, is married with five children and moved to Monahans in 1957.
