The Ward County Grand Jury indicted ten persons on February 7 including Cliff Bundick Tommy Snyder and Melvin Bean for January 17 hay theft at a Grandfalls ranch. Wayne Dinwiddie Wayne Mills BD Te Francis Roy R Wilkerson Valente Santiago Ornelas and Carlos Cadena Jr faced various charges from fraudulent checks to burglary of Sunbeam Grocery. The panel commended the Sheriff’s office for a fine job and Judge Starley noted the praise in court minutes.
Michael Wayne Andress son of Rev and Mrs Ken Andress of 1201 South Bruce has been nominated by the Monahans Optimist Club as Young Texan of the Month for February. The 17 year old Monahans High senior competes through zone regional and state levels for a statewide scholarship. He is National Honor Society president with a 92 to 93 GPA, played golf and baseball, and pursues music including trombone and piano across multiple bands.
A construction engineer arrives in Monahans to evaluate Hudler Junior High as architects Peters and Fields urge replacing the old building. The School Improvement Committee seeks an independent opinion to bolster the case for new facilities or remodeling, with a report due at a special school board meeting later this month.
The Wickett City Council scheduled city elections for April 3. Terms of W. W. Randolph, W. A. Garrard and J. C. Howorth expire. Filing deadline is March 3 and absentee voting runs March 15 to 30. The council raised minimum water rates by 50 cents from $4.50 to $5.00 for the first 5 000 gallons. higher rates unchanged.
The State Highway Department will open bids tomorrow for extending F-M 2355 to end of Argo Road in Western Ward County. The project links F-M 2355 from its current end northwest of Pyote to Argo Road northeast of Barstow to improve access to local oil fields.
The First State Bank and The First National Bank of Monahans posted new January records in deposits. First National topped 8 045 million, with resources over 9 million, while First State ended January with deposits over 10 million.
J B Davis admitted guilt for stealing a truckload of drill pipe north of Pyote and received seven years in prison. His son Jimmy aided an oil field theft ring across Texas New Mexico Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas until Ward County officers and Texas Rangers traced the ring. Jimmy was jailed on stolen pipe then federal car theft charges. Davis described his capture and surrender after seeing federal agents at his home and calling the sheriff to report readiness to turn himself in.
District Attorney Roddy Harrison will not contest a continuance as long as Bixler remains jailed without bond. A. R. Archer notes probation on a kidnapping conviction was revoked after indecent exposure charges. Final sentencing hinges on Bixler’s father’s court testimony and a March 11 hearing at 2 00 p.m.
The Grandfalls Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual banquet at 7 39 p m in the school cafeteria. Guest speaker is H L Wheat superintendent of McCamey. R O Wallis the chamber president is expected to preside.
Ward County adds 60 voters to the rolls since February 1 registration reopen, bringing total to 4706. The extension through February allows eligible electors to sign up. license plate sales continue at the Ward County Tax Office, and drivers not displaying valid tags after April 1 may face arrest and fines.
Monahans Volunteer Fire Department fought an oil well blaze four miles northwest of KMOM-TV Friday noon. Fire Chief Alan Cunning ham said welding in the cellar by casing crew sparked the fire, which burned oil in the cellar and spread to the casing rig. Firefighters contained the flames in about an hour, limiting damage to rear tires and minor attachments. Neal Bingham of Monahans reported the incident and alerted the FAA at Wink.
Local officers recovered a car reported stolen from Odessa after a 9 09 p m call near Wickett Cabot Camp. License plates showed ownership to Fiora A Capelle of Odessa and Odessa Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen.
U S Congressman Richard C White will be in Monahans this afternoon as part of his 16th district tour during the Lincoln Washington Birthday recess. He will attend a Democratic Club coffee from 4 to 5 pm at the National Room of the First National Bank and meet local citizens in an informal session. He also plans to attend the Chamber of Commerce banquet in Grandfalls Monday night before continuing his district itinerary.
