The region experiences near ninety degree days as spring arrives and recalls an unprecedented January cold snap that shattered low temperature records. Frost damaged shrubs like pyracantha while willows leaf out, raising concerns about lingering winter effects and regional renewal topics.
Monahans-Wickett Independent School District census as of January 31 reports 3,097 students, up from 3,004 a year earlier. White students total 3,009 with 88 colored, vs 2,923 white and 81 colored previously, as disclosed by Superintendent George Cullender.
Three incumbents filed for re election to the Mona hans Wickett School Board announced by Glenn Elrod school business manager. A 29 year old Monahans man, Bobby Rodgers, is jailed in Ward County in connection with a shooting at a service station on East Sealy Street early Wednesday. Billy Wilson, 35, was shot in the head and remained in fair condition at Midland Memorial Hospital. Rodgers denies the incident and faces assault with intent to murder. no bond set.
Final breakdown shows Monahans precincts 2W 921 and 2N 499 leading voting strength, Grandfalls 279, Barstow 165, Pyote 163, Wickett 178, Royalty 82, Cabot Camp 44, with a Ward County total of 3 848 poll taxes and 65 exemptions.
Monahans new Teenage Baseball League calls a 7:30 meeting tonight at the First National Bank Annex, urging all interested persons to attend. The venue was changed from the Chamber of Commerce building.
Bob Russell of Monahans was appointed Tuesday night to fill the unexpired term of T. D. Meacham on the Monahans Wickett School Board. Meacham had recently died and would have served until April next year. Russell’s term runs that length. The board also named administrative personnel for 1962 63 and accepted the resignation of Nell Steele. Paula Hudgins was named to replace Steele. The board approved a low bid of 1 574 75 for a 1959 Ford school car and reported district enrollment at 2 952 with current bills totaling 20 717 54.
County Democrats and Republicans held executive conclaves to set candidate funding for the upcoming primaries. Democrats outlined assessments from US Congress to precinct justice of the peace, while Republicans planned cost cuts with many judges and clerks unpaid.
City Manager Don Edmonds asks residents to watch for self styled professional tree pruners invading Monahans. Desert Sands Garden Club warns they leave unsatisfactory jobs and take money. City ordinances ban door to door solicitation. out of town pruners must be licensed and bonded. County Agent Johnny Harrison cautions prior advice and verification before hiring.
Lane Ward County Commissioners met in regular session to appoint election judges and assistants for the November general election and other county elections this year. The nine member absentee ballot canvassing board was also named, with one representative from each precinct.
Slim Clark announces his candidacy for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, subject to Republican primary voters in May. A 20 year Monahans resident, he is a former rig builder and drilling contractor now a pipe fitter. He cites education from A&M and UT and work as a mining engineer in New Mexico. He is a widower with two children, Richard in Monroe Louisiana and Sandra Evans of Dallas. He pledges merit based decisions and a conservative stance against federal regulations.
Monahans City Council okayed Wayne Long’s license to build and operate a trailer park on USS Highway 80 just inside the east limits, with requirements for a one inch gas line and five foot setback. Long plans a water well and septic, and may need to tie to a sewer line within 250 feet. The council also passed first reading of a hazardous-structure demolition ordinance, and awarded a near $2,000 bid to Water Tank Service Co. of Dallas to repair and repaint the 380,000 gallon water reservoir at the country club. Taps outside the city limits requested by Orbit-area residents were tabled until February 26.
