About 704 parents and friends attended the Ward County Scout Exposition at the Coliseum Friday night. Highlights included Indian dances Cub Scout Craft Boy Scout skills and Explorer high adventures.
The Ward County Democratic Club moved its February gathering to Pyote at the Community Center with a new date of February 21. President Mrs. Joy Massey announced the change, noting regular meetings are on the second Monday but this month’s event was postponed to Pyote.
Francisco Rico of Monahans faces charges after a Saturday tavern stabbing. Bond was set at $1000. The victim, Robert H. Williams of Monahans, is in Ward Memorial Hospital in good condition.
Kay Dufek, longtime Opportunity School teacher for 43 Ward County pupils, is nearing a B A in special education with a psychology minor from West Texas State Canyon. She gave up prior chemical engineering studies to focus on special education, completed hours by summer sessions and correspondence, and continues therapy training in Midland and Odessa. She heads a 13 year old daughter Patricia and lives on the Lazy K ranch with husband Jack, a Perry R Bass employee, while serving as 4 H adult leader and active in local juvenile and mental retardation committees.
Mrs. Vic Taylor case worker supervisor reports 72 children at the home with 44 pending admissions, 39 staff, and 116 capacity. Since Sept 1 the facility opened to dependents and received 176 referrals, 72 admitted. Racial makeup is 41 Latin American, 26 Anglo, five Negro. Lions also notes Rubinoff concert April 10 and upcoming Dale Carnegie course. 40 members and five guests attended.
Newcomers named include D. R. Fagler from 20091 South Stockton and Jim Kolb of 804 West 23rd Street along with D. L. Rains 1304 South Doris Avenue and Jose M. Banego 407 West 10th Street. Manahan firefighters battled a fierce house fire at the vacant residence owned by Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Carlos late Friday. The blaze began in the garage on the west side and intensified as strong westerly winds swept flames toward nearby houses.
Tom E. Mings, new Monahans Production District head for Humble Oil, told Monahans business leaders he will keep the firm in the city’s foreground. He outlined 11 county district coverage with 37 Monahans staff and 141 production employees handling 91 fields yielding about 18 000 barrels daily. Ben Oliver named Humble commission agent for Ward and Winkler counties.
The Lions Club opens Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children in Kerrville. The first two weeks start Sunday June 4 with five sessions planned for ages seven to sixteen. The camp, free for eligible blind deaf mute or crippled children, provides transportation. Call George Pascal at WI 3-2711 or WI 3-3356 for details.
Captain Finn Ronne, famed Antarctic explorer, will speak at the Odessa Knife and Fork Club meeting at the Country Club on Saturday February 18. Monahans members urged to reserve early. The club promotes good food, company, and minds with publicity led by Mrs. Tommy McCone.
Dr Harlan Harris of Boulder Colorado leads a revival at First Baptist Church assisted by Walter Buice of Muleshoe with Rev Francis Wilson urging attendance. Morning worship runs Monday to Friday at 10 a m and evening services at 7 30 p m nightly. Final services are Sunday February 19.
Ricky Pierce, senior 4 H Club member from Monahans, placed fifth in the heavy beef cattle division of the El Paso International Livestock Show held last week. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Walter Pierce Star Route. County agent Johnny Harrison will release further trip details. Thirty nine youngsters entered livestock, one of the southwest’s largest annual events.
More than sixty people attended Ward County's Fifth Annual Lincoln Dinner at the Colonial Inn last Thursday. E. Terry Condrey of Lubbock praised local Republicans and urged privatizing enterprise to foster America’s growth while noting party expansion and influence.
Public invited to sit in on Monday council session at 2 p.m. eleven agenda items include highway and lighting contracts, county fire fighting, zoning board vacancies, pipeline installation and routing, frontage road right of way, and business from the floor. The tenth item covers discussing a rate change with Southern Union Gas Co. the request aims for a hike effective April 1, previously tabled four times.
The Sandhills Park and Museum Society will host a 3 D film titled Murder of Silence at Tatuma Cale torium on February 21 at 7 15 p m open to the public and members. Produced by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department the film highlights Texas scenery with R J Hoyer noting strong state interest and an expected attendance over 300.
Brother Roy E. Stephens, formerly of Brownwood, leads a gospel meeting at the Church of Christ on 15th and Main. Services are held nightly at 7 30 and the public is invited.
A new square dance class directed by Jack Mason will begin Friday February 17 at 7:30 PM at the Community Center. The Cross Trailers Square Dance Club sponsors the new class.
Gerald Virden a first class lineman for Texas Electric Service Company suffered a fractured hip when a pole he was working on fell near Pyote just before 3 p.m. He was rushed to Ward Memorial Hospital by a Hammond Funeral Home ambulance after the pole broke and lodged in a tree with him on it. Virden and his wife Kay reside at 606 S. James having lived in Monahans three years since transferring from Odessa.
Mrs Claude Hollen attended the Sophomore Parents Weekend at Agnes Scott College in Decatur Georgia from Friday to Sunday Her daughter Claudia participated in activities designed to show parents student life at the college
