Indignation rises as communities in Odessa and Monahans rally against obscene comic books magazines and paperback titles for children. Odessa elementary PTA members signed 400 petitions urging newsstands to remove such material and PTA mothers visited shops in Monahans to press for action.
Monahans man Jack Shumate faces two counts of assault with intent to murder after a 12 gauge shotgun firing at an upstairs apartment on East Second Street caused no injuries. Charges filed by ex-wife Leona Shumate and Jack Stewart. Shumate held on two 5000 bonds in Ward County Jail.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Barnes Funeral Chapel for Mrs. Minnie A. About $400 damage was done to a 1958 Ford four door sedan and $100 to Post Office mailboxes in a one car accident Saturday around 10 15 p m. Edwin T James of Imperial 28 years old was the driver when the Ford collided with two mailboxes on a traffic island in front of the Post Office at Fourth and Betty.
Monahans’ outstanding young man of the year will be presented tonight at the Junior Chamber of Commerce DSA banquet. The event starts at 7 o’clock in Tatum Cafeteria with roast beef and baked ham and all trimmings. Emcee will be Mac Hudgins and State Jaycee Vice-President Bill Ingram will present the DSA award.
A weekend break-in at Farr's Super Market netted about $18 from a Coca-Cola and 7-Up machine. Manager Ronald Harper reported the incident at 11:45 a.m. Sunday. Police found the rear door pried open from inside. the locks had been unlocked with keys and no prints were found. An inventory was needed to confirm any additional losses.

Police investigate a break in at a warehouse on East Highway 80. Thieves entered through a north side office window and stole an adding machine and seven cases of coffee from the building owned by Bill Solomon.
Bennie Earnest Wilson, 19, charged with assault and battery and robbery with firearms in a Pecos service station holdup, will go to trial February 27 in Judge J. H. Starley's 143rd District Court at Ward County Courthouse on venue change. Wilson is held in Reeves County Jail. Curtis Ray Roberts, 19, is jailed in Dallas while appealing a death sentence for robbery with firearms. A special venue will hear Wilson's case. juror lists will be announced.
Monahans-Wickett Independent School District plans its annual academic fair for March 6 aligning with Texas Public School Week. Each school will host a full fair with classroom displays and room projects plus a parental workshop to explain school policies and home relations. Superintendent Wesley N. Martin invites all parents and friends to attend, with exhibits 7:30 to 8 p.m. and again after the workshop until 9 p.m.
Monahans High School students nominate two slates for the upcoming student council election set for Friday. Seven boys compete for president and will also choose first and second vice presidents from the same group. Seven girls seek records, corresponding and treasurer posts.
About 200 teachers from Ward County travel to El Paso March 2 to 4 for the 28th Trans-Pecos Convention of District 6 Texas State Teachers Association. The event at Hotel Cortez and Texas Western College includes sessions, speakers Dr. Vernon Sisney and Dr. George Bereday, and district officer elections.
The Monahans City Council met in a special session to authorize selling all $150,000 in street improvement bonds approved by voters in 1947 and 1956 but unused. They cited the bond market's current unusually hot conditions as the reason for action.
Carolyn Cates, a senior at Monahans High School, is named finalist in the 1960 61 National Merit Scholarship Program. She earned finalist status by strong tests and high school endorsement amid about 9 800 finalists nationwide. Final selections announced April 2 will determine four year merit scholarships from National Merit Corp and sponsors.
City councilmen meet this afternoon at 2 at city hall with items on the agenda including acceptance of bids for cleaning repairs and painting of the Eight Street elevated storage tank. Plains Machinery bid $8500 with trade in for a Hough loader and proposals for hangar leasing at the airport are among topics.
