Ward County MOD drive tops $6203 with regional gifts

Fund raising in Grandfalls Royalty Barstow and Pyote raised 906.94 252 209 respectively pushing Ward County March of Dimes total to 6203.81 well above the 5000 goal. Coin containers still to be counted as the drive closes and small thefts are noted.

Valentine Coronation set for Feb 15 at M H S

Monahans High School announces the Valentine Coronation to name King and Queen of Hearts at 8 p.m. Feb 15 in the high school auditorium. Senior Jeannie Bob Hart and Leon Stout, Juniors Ronda Smith and James Parker, and Sophomores Mary Porte Cooper and Donnie Smith are candidates. Tickets cost 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children, with proceeds funding the school annual printing.

Scout Exposition A Success In Ward County

About 1 000 people toured eleven scout units at the first Arrowhead District Scout Exposition held Saturday in the County Coliseum. Judge Harry Masters named award winners with Pack 163 and Troop 63 among Blue Ribbon recipients.

Milton Parker Takes Post as Wickett Church Minister

Milton S Parker has become minister of the Church of Christ in Wickett arriving from Lake City Florida. He brings about thirty years in ministry serving Georgia Alabama Tennessee and Texas including Marfa. He studied at Freed Hardeman College in Tennessee and has six children four of whom reside with the family in Wickett. The church invites the public to attend services.

School Census 202 Above Last Year's Total

The Monahans-Wickett school district census for 1958-59 reached 2765 this week, 202 above last year with further gains expected as two major oil firms set district offices here. Mrs Fay Goodwin and Mrs Ernestine Watson supervise census work and urge unenumerated eligible students and parents to contact the superintendent’s office this week.

Grandfalls Citizens Unite for Arbor Day Park Project

Grandfalls residents of all ages joined Sorosis Study Club in an Arbor Day effort to beautify the poolside park. Volunteers hauled two truckloads of shrubs and native trees, then dedicated the space with a 3 PM ceremony and certificate awards for contributors.

Light Snow Falls Here Tuesday Night

Monahans and surroundings endured sub freezing temperatures and cold drizzle with a half inch of snow this week. A light snow began Tuesday afternoon and left a thin ground cover. The week’s high reached 47 degrees while the low dropped to 20 degrees Wednesday morning.

City Council Adopts New Annexation Policy

After months of discussion the City Council adopted a policy shifting water and sewer extension costs to developers for future annexations with 75 percent funded by developers and 25 percent by the city. The measure aims to curb growing bonded indebtedness while developers continue to install curbs gutters and paving. The council also approved second readings for a trailer park and plumbing ordinance changes raising tap fees from 20 to 33 dollars. An April 1 1958 city election was set to fill expiring seats with March 1 1958 as filing deadline and Jaycees requested use of east Community Building property for a July carnival.

Park Museum Preview: Hugh Cabot Exhibit Opens in Monahans

One man show titled A New Englander's View of West Texas features pencil drawings water colors and oils by Hugh Cabot MI Boston artist. The exhibit runs Saturdays Sundays 2 to 7 pm and weekdays 2 to 5 pm at Monahans Sandhills State Park Museum starting this Saturday. A reception is planned for 8 pm with the Wednesday Study Club as hostess. Cabot a 27 year old former Harvard student and Navy combat artist served with the First Marine Division at the 38th Parallel and aboard USS Princeton earning commendations. He previously exhibited in Tokyo under U S Navy sponsorship drawing 30 000 visitors including the Emperor's brother. Now residing in Fort Stockton Texas.

Precinct Judges Appointed For 1958 Elections

The Commissioners Court named election judges for 1958 and approved a deputy county clerk. They authorized expenses for the District Attorney to attend a conference in Austin and for 4-H participation in the Houston Fat Stock Show. Precinct judges include Robert Miller, Paul Williams, A P Sligh, Mrs J C Chapman, Walt Roeber, Cliff Greenlee, Jack Carroll, Mrs Rena Wright, Mrs J B Crawford, Mrs J T McSpadden, Mrs W L Bearden, E I Yarger, Mrs C E Daniel, and Mrs I L Harbison. Barstow and Monahans officials join the special canvassing board. one more member will be named.

School Principals and Dean of Students Win New Contracts

The school board reelected nine principals and the high school dean, Harley Sledge, approved two new teachers, and set an April 5 trustee election. It named replacements across multiple campuses, accepted resignations of two teachers, and authorized bus purchase and facility sales.

Six Injured in High Traffic Mishaps City Police Report

Three recent city traffic accidents left six people slightly injured and caused about 1725 in damages. A Burns vehicle overturned at South Faye and West 10th injuring Mrs Burns and four children plus Mildred Jones. Another crash on South Main and East 8th involved Snow and ice. A third collision at South Betty near 10th Street involved Robert Cowan and Cecil Scott.
