Thanks Given For Help At Pancake Supper

Kiwanis Club and Monahans Boys' Club thank local businesses and individuals for aiding the pancake supper Saturday night. Contributors include Texas Electric Service Co. The event raised about 175 dollars to start the Boys' Club Fund Drive.

Monahans Man Injured Sunday In Truck Wreck

R E Jackson a truck driver for Jim Jordan Moving and Storage of Monahans was badly injured when his empty van was hit broadside by a loaded west bound truck about five miles west of Odessa on US 80. The other truck driver R J McCoy of Dallas died at the scene. Hardin Covington of Monahans riding with Jackson was treated for a head cut and released.

Park attendance at Sandhills State Park in January

A total of 3,330 visitors used Sandhills State Park in January. Of these, 135 were from out of state. Overnight campers numbered 75, while 3,255 visited for daytime outings.

Five Steps To Industrial Development For West Texas

Harry Clark of the Texas Industrial Commission outlined five steps for industrial development at a seminar in Austin for Permian Basin chambers of commerce. The steps are Community Betterment, Research, Financing, Sites buildings and land, and Prospecting, to be followed in order. Governor Connally urged local effort to attract industry while noting state support and future industrial growth, including saline water purification research benefiting the Permian Basin. Monahans Chamber officials called the trip worthwhile, hoping it spurs results. The report also notes a Lincoln Day Dinner in Monahans with speaker R F Juedeman and tickets set at two dollars.

Monahans Boys Club Announces Open House Dates

The Monahans Boys Club sets open house hours for February 13 from 5 to 9 pm and February 14 from 1 to 5 pm hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitors can tour the building meet directors and see progress since the organization moved to 1111 Gail. Ward County youth gains from community efforts and local contributions are highlighted.

Guns Stolen From Car Near Catholic Church

John Yates reported two firearms missing from his vehicle parked near the Catholic Church Tuesday night. A Model II Remington 12 gauge shotgun and a Colt Bisly Police Positive pistol were taken, and Yates notified City Police after returning to his car about 9 30 p.m.

Texas Electric Cuts Rates While Taxes Rise in Monahans

Texas Electric officials tell Monahans City Council of a rate reduction that benefits high use residential customers and lowers gross income by about 5 percent. Tesco also raises gross receipts tax from 2 to 3 percent, boosting city payments by roughly 6,020 dollars to about 18,060 dollars for street and alley rental.

Chamber Leaders Meet in Big Spring Workshop

About 10 to 12 directors and committee chairs from the local Chamber of Commerce will join a one day community leaders workshop in Big Spring next Wednesday. Friends report H. J. Asher is making satisfactory recovery after major surgery at Odessa Medical Center last Saturday. Latest reports indicate his condition is good and visitors may be allowed.

Hamman Files For City Posts In April Election

Wayne Long the owner of two movie theaters and a real estate firm has filed for Mayor in the April 6 election. Jerry Hamman seeks a Council seat and Gulf Oil petroleum engineer is married with two sons. Incumbent Mayor Jim Williams, who assumed office after Ralph Barnes’s death, will run for his first elected term. Councilmen L B Stevenson Sr Jack Sharp and Bob Russell have terms ending this year. filing closes March 6.

Gas meter blast injures two near town

Two men suffered minor injuries when a gas meter blew off a well about 11 miles south of town. M. H. Morrison of Odessa and E. E. Bizere of Kermit were treated locally. Morrison was sent to Midland, injuries not believed serious. They work for National Tank Co and Skelly Oil Co.

Civil Jury Week Opens With 65 Prospective Jurors

Sixty five prospective jurors are summoned to report at 9 30 Monday morning for a week long civil court session. The docket lists 42 cases and includes members such as Mrs Wayne Downing James A McLaren and Bob Leikman among names on the jury list.

Commissioners Let Petroleum Contracts For Year

The county awarded treaties for petroleum products and lubricants for the coming year at the Commissioners Court meeting. Precincts 1 2 3 and 4 received contracts for gasoline diesel and lubricants from local firms. First National Bank was named depository for two years. a resolution opposing Veterans Hospitals closures was adopted and applications for the vacant Veterans Service Officer post were reviewed.

Monday Night Weather Delivers Snow in Monahans Area

Moisture laden skies produced a quarter inch of moisture in Monahans Monday night as drizzle and light snow occurred. About an inch of snow fell, then sun returned by Tuesday morning and by 10 a.m. the snow had melted. A mild wind picked up around noon Tuesday and faded by mid afternoon.
