Monahans Mrs. Jerry Runnels 1959 May graduate of Monahans High School died early today in Winkler County Hospital from an incurable pneumonia. Funeral plans are pending at Barnes Funeral Home. Survived by her husband, parents Mr and Mrs Bill Bien, and six week old son Ricky.
The Mona hans-Wickett schools announce Monday evening study halls from 6 30 to 9 30 at the Senior High and Junior High buildings. Rules require registered students to attend only if staying for study and to check in and out with teachers. Attendance records will be sent to parents and the school.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Ann Anderson 64 of Wickett were held at the First Baptist Church in Monahans with Rev. Levi Price officiating. Interment followed in Monahans cemetery. She died at Ward Memorial Hospital. Born April 27 1895 in Mooringsport Louisiana she was married to E A Anderson since 1910. Survived by her husband a daughter Mary Ellen Anderson Mooringsport a son Ernest A Anderson Houston a sister Dora Hightower Park Grove Arkansas a brother Ance Gilbert Houston and three grandchildren and a great grandchild.
The Evaluation Committee for the Monahans Master Plan will meet again to review progress. The session is set for February 25 in the State Highway Department conference room.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday for Clayton Martin 82 of Snyder father of B. D. Martin of Monanans. He had been ill and died at 2 30 p.m. Monday in a Snyder hospital. He lived most of his life in and around Snyder.
City Council approved a $1000 boost to the Monahans Youth Center budget to cover a deficit in 1960. The aid is temporary and to be reviewed at year end, with plans for a mutual support agreement with the County. The center had sought funding after prior County action cut utility bills and annual gifts. The center's maintenance budget totals 4530 while receipts are 3530.
County Chairman Tom Neel announced Democratic primary filing fees. County offices 450 dollars, district offices 150, JPs and constables 10, U.S. Congress member 25, state representative and senator 10. All payments due by February 13 to appear on the ballot.
In a brief meeting the Commissioners Court set the tax rate at 1.15 per 100 valuation and appointed election judges alongside polling places for the year. Precincts list Barstow, Calvary Baptist Church Monahans, and several community centers with named judges. Absentee ballot canvassing board named Couch, Ratliff, and Curry.
The City Council denied a 1500 damage claim from S & S Grocery arising when a city sewer line stepped up and back into the store last August. Attorney Murray J. Bowze said he will sue the city. City Attorney R B McGowen cited no liability, noting a beer can and iron bar caused the step up and were taken from the sewer line.
Monahans High School crowns its King and Queen of Hearts during a Valentine celebration in the auditorium. A senior royal court of six selects the sovereigns from Joyce Stone, Lu Dawkins, Becky Reeves, Jack Griggs, Weldon Price, and Robert White with junior and sophomore nominees for prince and princess. Voting tied to selling tickets. proceeds support the annual staff.
The Oasis Hotel in Monahans fell to progress after years of sandstorms and misfits. City Council condemned the building for wiring and fire zone violations. Operator Tommy Pearson notes it will be torn down. construction date unknown but present before 1930 per locals.
City Councilmen agreed to renew the Country Club lease for 15 years on golf course land and delayed action on adjoining land for a future 18 hole expansion until expansion begins within five years. Club president Tom Pence said current membership is 165 with a 200 cap projected, planning growth may require more room.
Terry and Jerry Bawcom of Wickett will be honored at an Eagle and Silver Recognition Banquet Friday night at Midland.
Residents of Precinct 2 hold 76.5 percent of the county voting strength from a county tax office release. The total 4344 poll taxes and exemptions are broken down by precincts and voting boxes with counts for Barstow Monalans Wic kett Precinct 2 Monanans Monehans and others.
Monahans Trade and Commerce Association will install a year round air conditioning unit and furnish the Mona hans Chamber of Commerce Building. Profits from the local stamp program will cover about 4000 dollars of costs. John Wheeler, the association president, cited merchant and shopper participation as key to the program’s success. Details of the purchase and bids will be announced later.
City Manager Morris Howard and other city officials will attend the Region IV meeting of the Texas Municipal League Friday at Andrews. Archie Sherrod, district highway engineer, will speak on State Highway Aids for Cities.
