Scouts Rally Districts to Celebrate Boy Scout Week

About 150 Boy Scouts from Mona has Wink Kermit Pecos and Grandfalls gather at Monahans Athletic Field Saturday at 1 p m for a district rally marking the 28th anniversary of the Boy Scout movement. Activities include field events scoutcraft safety demonstrations and competitions such as sprints relays knot tying signaling tug of war and marksmanship under supervision.

Sewell Infant Dies in Local Hospital

Funeral services for Mack Denton Sewell infant son of Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Sewell were held Tuesday at 3 from Walter Harwell Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Ray McGrew. Interment followed at Monahans Cemetery.

1 276 Barrels Daily For 3 Ward Wells

Three wells totaling a daily average production of 1 276.08 barrels was recorded for Ward county this week. Humble No 21 F University in the Wickett area flowed 466.85 barrels in 24 hours, pay topped at 2 565 feet. Humble No 27 Richter in Estes pool yielded 78 24 barrels in six hours for 625 92 barrels daily, shot with 114 quarts nitroglycerin. Location details follow. A. E. Lynch No 3 B Himmel in South Ward produced 183.31 barrels in 24 hours, pay topped at 2 255 feet when shot with 150 quarts. Location given.

The First State Bank will close on Saturday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's Birthday as a legal bank holiday.

Melvin S. Davis was elected president of the Monahans Chamber of Commerce for 1938 to succeed retiring president H. F. Grayson. The second annual dinner and ladies night drew members and wives to the Presbyterian Church banquet room. H. Houston of Gulf Oil outlined local operations noting 256 Gulf employees in Ward County with $45 000 monthly wages. William Coghill of Ozark Chemical highlighted uses of sodium sulfate or salt cake and its production process.

A baby boy weighing eight pounds was born February 3 at Turney Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hall. The infant was named Billie Jack.

Oil Field Worker Injured as Cable Breaks Near O'Brien Lease

A Gulf Oil Corporation employee A. J. Burnett was seriously hurt Thursday at 11 am on the O'Brien lease about 10 miles northwest of town when a pulling cable broke. The pin struck his back while he sat in a tractor seat, causing severe contusions. He was transported to Rehmeyer Hospital by Harwell ambulance.

New Pharmacist Opens at City Pharmacy in Monahans

Gray Bourland of Fort Worth began working this week as pharmacist and manager of the City Pharmacy in Monahans. Jack Hutcheson, owner of City Pharmacy, moves to Big Spring to manage the Big Spring baseball club. Mr and Mrs Bourland and daughter Elizabeth Anne relocate to Monahans this week.

Thieves Steal Large Supply Of Cigarettes

Thieves looted the Wooten Wholesale Grocery and the Shell Oil Company warehouse on Highway 80 east of town, taking 150 car tons of cigarettes from the grocery and rifling papers at both businesses. Entrance was gained through the roof at Wooten, with fingerprints taken and police investigating clues as to motive and other valuables. A similar theft occurred the previous night at Wink, where about 100 cartons were taken from Whitehouse Grocery.

May Call New Election In WYceed Courthouse Contest

County authorities released a precinct by precinct tally of Ward County poll taxes paid in 1938. Total taxes paid reached 2672 with Monahans precinct contributing 1630, over 61 percent, while Barstow 289, Pyote Wickett 242, and Grand Falls Royalty 511 in the breakdown.

New Monahans Post Office Structure Near Completion

The Monahans Post Office building is on track for completion around March 1 with roofing done and most of the exterior finished. John C. Seale, contractor, says stucco will begin Monday or Tuesday and interior work will start within the week. The Prince Brothers Building Company is constructing the facility and has secured the lease to begin next month as the local post office moves in.

McKee No 1-A Deepens After Strong Test Flow

Magnolia No 1-A McKee Ordovician wildcat was deepened to 5 302 feet from 5 295 feet and recovered 3 1/2 barrels of 3 gravity oil. Reportedly the test will be carried deeper. Last Saturday the 5 295 foot interval kicked off and flowed 137 barrels in 1 hour 10 minutes, part of a 405 barrel load.

Cattleman Sells 1700 Head From Ward County Range

Seventeen hundred head of cattle were sold by Jim Tubb to J. W. Bonner of Gainesville. The stock was shipped to California and northern Texas for grazing, with the cattle raised on Tubb's ranch south of Monahans and shipped from Ward County via Texas and Pacific routes.

Stop Signs Placed To Regulate North South Traffic

City installs stop signs at the Pacific Street and League Avenue intersection and at Minor and League to give priority to Pacific and Minor Street traffic. Sealy Avenue and U. S. 80 remain exceptions with north south right of way. City Secretary Miss Ilda Vernon says signs are being distributed from Sealy Avenue and more postings will follow.

The census report released in Washington shows Ward County with 124 totally unemployed and 145 partly unemployed seeking more work while 5 are in federal emergency projects. State totals reach 451769 unemployed or on emergency programs. national figures exceed 11 million in the army of jobless and partially employed.

Sand skiing party uncovers mammoth molar in West Texas

A Monahans group on a sand hills outing found a decayed bone and a large tooth in a dune, later identified as a sea elephant molar by Sul Ross Teachers College. The find suggests the creature drowned in local swamps about 25 000 years ago. The discoverers plan further study and possible museum transfer.

Four new test wells staked in Ward county oil area

Ward county reports four new test locations last week as part of 38 more sites in West Texas. Across 11 counties the first four weeks of 1938 yielded 166 test locations. Ward's sites include Humble No. 30 Richter and Humble No. 31 Richter near section 27 34 H&TC, Texas Pacific No. 24 James near section 534 H&TC, and H. S. Ward No. 1 Brown heirs near section 34 1 H&TC.

Government Agents To Assist In Filing Income Tax Returns

Representatives of the U S Department of Internal Revenue will be in Monahans next month to help citizens file income tax returns. Deputy collectors H. Broaddus and S BD Priest will be at the Texas Hotel from 8 30 a m to 4 00 p m on March 2. The service is free and residents are urged to call for needed assistance.

Ward Officials Transfer Alleged Hijacker to Reeves County Jail

Jack Perry, accused of hijacking west of town on January 27, was captured in Odessa by Ector County officers and handed to Ward County authorities the next day. Judge A G Burton and Officer Buck Hutchison escorted him to Pecos where he was jailed pending Ward County grand jury action.

Dallas Man Fined 32 On Separate Charges

Dallas resident J. R. Gatewood paid fines totaling 32 in Judge Burton's court after arrest by State Highway Patrolman A B Nail. He was fined 18 for reckless riding and 14 for disturbing the peace.

Dismissal in Barstow County Seat Controversy Ends Testimony

A judgment dismissing the case was entered after five days of testimony before Judge J A Crane in Ward County's 108th District Court Barstow. Both sides agreed the last November vote moving county seat to Monahans was illegal and void, ending further trial within present lines. Witnesses questioned voters' residency poll tax payment and voting methods, leaving many votes contested and subject to appeals. Monahans citizens' committee could not confirm whether to call another election after the time limit.

City Streets Graded and Caliche Spreading Completed

City and County Road departments report caliche spread and grading on Water street and extension into the Wildman addition. Several side streets received additional caliche surfacing. Wickett streets also improved in recent weeks.

Gotcher Becomes Sole Owner of Local Cafe

M. L. Gotcher, manager of Masters Cafe, has become sole owner after buying out partner W. P. Masters of Odessa. A well known restaurateur, Gotcher has run Masters Cafe in Hobbs and Monahans, previously residing in Sweetwater. The cafe will keep the Masters name under current management.
