City Council bans unconfined dogs by raising impounding fees to 25 or 30 dollars with 1 dollar daily charges and hikes future fees by five dollars per repeat. Warden pay rises to 291 with 2 dollars per animal incentive pay. Officer patrols and cage tampering cited as reasons for stricter rules and penalties.
Tuck Jolley announced that the circle is drawn so get your hats in the ring after the board passed an election order at Tuesday night’s meeting. Places 3, 4 and 5 are open with March 2 filing deadline and April 2 elections. Greb and Lisman filed for reelection.
Ward County investigators pursue leads after a Saturday night campsite shooting and attempted robbery west of town. Michael Dow of Brewer Maine is in Ward Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition from a shotgun wound to the right hip. Dow and his family were visiting Arizona relatives and staying in a camper at Loop 464 and Interstate 20 when the incident occurred after Dow surprised a prowler who demanded money. The assailant fled as officers searched the area. Other police activity includes glass breakage reports at several local sites and theft charges against David and Nannie Placker of Monahans with bonds set at 2000 each.
A Defensive Driving Course starts Monday in Grandfalls with evening 6:30 to 10:30 sessions on February 14 and 15 at the Reddy Room Texas Electric Service and a daytime class February 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Courses feature instructors Cozette Yates Mildred Rose and John Smithers with bilingual options and insurance premium reductions for eight hours. Call 547-2956 for details.
The committee approves holidays for the year and a George Washington's Birthday sale event slated for February 17 to 19. A Cherry Pie Contest and Auction by a local radio station raises funds for the Opportunity School with judging on February 18 and the auction on February 19. Holidays include Independence Day Labor Day Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Monahans will host the Area IV meeting of the Texas Municipal League at the Country Club Friday night with a 6:30 social hour and 7:30 meeting. Austin’s Dick Ingram will speak as many West Texas city officials attend led by Mayor R J Hoyer.
