A local column by A G Adair recalls meeting Rev. Fred Ryle at a Lions Club event and applauds Monahans civic boosters for the Boys Club effort. It laments modern get rich schemes and defends traditional values amid youth culture and media fame.
Sketch sheets are available at the Chamber of Commerce for residents to submit landscape plans for two Monahans city parks. prizes include two first prizes of 50 dollars and two second prizes of 25 dollars. Deadline is midnight February 15. city crews will perform the park work when not needed for other projects.
Paul Foraker former editor of the Monahans News has accepted a part time editor post at the Wink Bulletin, returning to the paper he served in 1959-60. He will retain his duties as public relations and advertising director for Kent Oil Company of Wickett.
The Permian Basin Empire reports 207 rotary rigs in operation, up from 204 a week earlier and four behind the 1963 weekly total of 211. Lea County leads with 44 rigs, Ector and Pecos Counties tie for second at 15, Andrews at 14, and other counties show smaller counts across the region.
A community notice welcomes new residents including Eddie Thompson of 1507 West 2nd James C Ramsey at 907 North Betty Joe L Harrill of 116 East 8th and Harry T Stewart at 704 West Tth with greetings from neighbors.
All Democrats are invited to a county wide meeting Thursday night February 13 at 7 30 in the district courtroom at the courthouse. Important matters will be discussed and attendance is urged.
Monahans undertakes an updated traffic control project adding three signals at Third and Alice East Sealy and Franklin and West Sealy and Eva. The Third and Alice light will stop traffic for fire engine departure via a police station switch. Sealy intersections will be traffic actuated while US 80 remains green otherwise.
Ward Lanes sponsors 3-6-9 Alibi Doubles and Singles from February 8 to 23. Bowl four games pay for three with automatic strikes in the third sixth and ninth frames. After four games, players keep their three best scores with handicap for prize money. Open to all men and women.
AP feature notes that fewer women smoke than men but that female smoking could overtake male rates if current trends continue. It cites studies showing 36 percent of women smokers by age 25, smaller babies among pregnant smokers, and parental attitudes affecting children’s smoking. Findings come from the Surgeon General advisory committee review.
An American Cancer Society study shows women smokers up to 36 percent, with rising numbers among Jewish women and high school seniors. By age 25 smoking prevalence reaches about 36 percent for women and 60 percent for men, while divorced and widowed individuals show higher rates. Seven studies link maternal smoking during pregnancy to lighter birth weights and more premature births, though causality remains unclear.
Sid Pittman of the Ward County Riding and Roping Club outlines plans for the Silver Anniversary 4-H Fat Stock Show Parade, to precede the 25th Anniversary Show at 5 p.m. March 5. Entry deadline is 4:30 p.m. March 4. entries via Monahans divisions. Parade themes include Civic and Business, Youth Groups, Bands, Riding and Roping Clubs, and Sheriff's Posse. Club barbecue at Hill City Park follows the parade with tickets from club members.
Through 4 o'clock Friday afternoon only two people had registered for free voting in national elections. Tax Collector Arthur Bowman said registrations will continue through March 6.
Grandfalls Mayor Raglin announced the resignation of City Secretary Mrs Faye McSpadden after 10 months and opened Tuesday at 4 pm for applicants to fill the post. The City Council planned to discuss traffic safety changes and hearings on zoning and park bids at today’s session.
District Court resumes with a new jury panel and the same docket as last week. One case tried, two settled, one postponed. First hearing today is M. F. Rose vs A&B, Inc. a damage suit from an automobile accident. Jurors report at 9 30 a.m.
Ward County Civil Defense Director G C Weller announced graduates of the Radio logical Monitoring course. Those completing the full program include Mrs R B Bowman Mrs Claude Hollen Mr and Mrs Marshall Blount N R Bragg Jack A Corbell John O Davis F W Glass Gordon Ray J F Homer G H Walker and M L Westerall. A new class starts February 17 18 in the Courthouse Commissioners Courtroom enrollment open to all including those who began but did not finish. L D Roberts died Friday night at Riders Cafe from two shots fired after an argument over beer price. The 24 year old, born February 7 1940 in Tyler, was killed on his birthday while Rider, operator of the cafe, was held on murder charges with a $3000 bond. Roberts survived by his wife and his father Earl Roberts of Roswell New Mexico. Services are set for Tuesday at 2 pm at Shilo Baptist Church with Monahans Cemetery interment.
The Monahans Civil Defense Group met in the Commissioners Court Room with Mrs Pris cilla Webb presiding. They announced a 1951 Dodge ambulance secured for local rescue work and furnishing for the Civil Defense Control Center in the courthouse basement as part of remodeling.
Funeral services were held Sunday in Colorado City for Mrs Margie Smith 75 mother of John E Smith former Monahans News employee now resident of Andrews. Mrs Smith died last Friday afternoon after a lengthy illness.
Jack Grant announces Feb. 18 as the kickoff date for a campaign to raise 7764 for the new Monahans Boys Club. A Mexican Supper hosted by the Monahans Jaycee Ettes will raise funds with tickets at 1.25 for adults and 0.75 for children.
The high school stages a yearlong rivalry among classes for the King and Queen of Hearts title. Crowning occurs Saturday February 15 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium with a coronation ball at Tatum Cafeteria and proceeds funding the high school annual.
