Rotary Count Up Slightly in Permian Basin Drilling

The Permian Basin Empire reports 207 rotary rigs in operation, up from 204 a week earlier and four behind the 1963 weekly total of 211. Lea County leads with 44 rigs, Ector and Pecos Counties tie for second at 15, Andrews at 14, and other counties show smaller counts across the region.

City to Install Three More Traffic Signals in Monahans

Monahans undertakes an updated traffic control project adding three signals at Third and Alice East Sealy and Franklin and West Sealy and Eva. The Third and Alice light will stop traffic for fire engine departure via a police station switch. Sealy intersections will be traffic actuated while US 80 remains green otherwise.

3-6-9 Alibi Bowling Events At Ward Lanes

Ward Lanes sponsors 3-6-9 Alibi Doubles and Singles from February 8 to 23. Bowl four games pay for three with automatic strikes in the third sixth and ninth frames. After four games, players keep their three best scores with handicap for prize money. Open to all men and women.

AP feature notes that fewer women smoke than men but that female smoking could overtake male rates if current trends continue. An American Cancer Society study shows women smokers up to 36 percent, with rising numbers among Jewish women and high school seniors. By age 25 smoking prevalence reaches about 36 percent for women and 60 percent for men, while divorced and widowed individuals show higher rates. Seven studies link maternal smoking during pregnancy to lighter birth weights and more premature births, though causality remains unclear.

Livestock Show Parade Plans Take Shape in Ward County

Sid Pittman of the Ward County Riding and Roping Club outlines plans for the Silver Anniversary 4-H Fat Stock Show Parade, to precede the 25th Anniversary Show at 5 p.m. March 5. Two Register for Free Voting Through Friday Deadline

Through 4 o'clock Friday afternoon only two people had registered for free voting in national elections. Tax Collector Arthur Bowman said registrations will continue through March 6.

Traffic Safety Problems Dominate Grandfalls City Meeting

Grandfalls Mayor Raglin announced the resignation of City Secretary Mrs Faye McSpadden after 10 months and opened Tuesday at 4 pm for applicants to fill the post. The City Council planned to discuss traffic safety changes and hearings on zoning and park bids at today’s session.

Two Shots Fatal To Local Man

L D Roberts died Friday night at Riders Cafe from two shots fired after an argument over beer price. The 24 year old, born February 7 1940 in Tyler, was killed on his birthday while Rider, operator of the cafe, was held on murder charges with a $3000 bond. Roberts survived by his wife and his father Earl Roberts of Roswell New Mexico. Services are set for Tuesday at 2 pm at Shilo Baptist Church with Monahans Cemetery interment.

Monahans Civil Defense Committee Meets in Courthouse

The Monahans Civil Defense Group met in the Commissioners Court Room with Mrs Pris cilla Webb presiding. They announced a 1951 Dodge ambulance secured for local rescue work and furnishing for the Civil Defense Control Center in the courthouse basement as part of remodeling.

Mother of Former News Employee Dies in Colorado City

Funeral services were held Sunday in Colorado City for Mrs Margie Smith 75 mother of John E Smith former Monahans News employee now resident of Andrews. Mrs Smith died last Friday afternoon after a lengthy illness.

Mexican Supper Launches County Fund Drive for Boys Club

Jack Grant announces Feb. 18 as the kickoff date for a campaign to raise 7764 for the new Monahans Boys Club. A Mexican Supper hosted by the Monahans Jaycee Ettes will raise funds with tickets at 1.25 for adults and 0.75 for children.
