Chamber of Commerce directors met to organize a September membership drive and to handle arrangements for the West Texas Choral Contest on April 1. The event is expected to draw about 2000 schoolchildren to Monahans, with a possible outdoor pageant on the athletic field at the end.
Ward County Health Committee discussed expanding health work at its January 31 meeting. Dr. H H Puckett proposed adding a sanitarian to the nurse already employed and prorating director expenses with Winkler Reeves counties. Proposals include forming multi county groups with trained nurses and sanitarians and a medical director for each 20 000 to 50 600 population group.
District Attorney William Kerr and Sheriff Irby Dyer joined county and state officials in Andrews Monday over the fatal shooting of Norman McKinney by Sheriff Dick Dillard. Dillard’s bond was set at $5000.
Rex Hill was released from the hospital Wednesday after an illness from flu. He is a salesman for the Ft. Worth Supply Company.
Ilda Vernon, city secretary and treasurer since July 1933, is featured as Neighbor of the Week. A Farmersville native and UT alum, she lived in Monahans since 1927 aside from college years, taught in local schools, and is active in the Delphian chapter and Baptist Church.
Charles G. Walker of Menahans High School was elected state band chairman of Region 8 at a State Music Directors' Association meeting in Houston. Region 8 covers a wide area from Stan ton to El Paso and Gaines County to the border. The appointment includes regional and state boards of control. A spring preview at the convention showcased two all state bands and a 200 voice chorus.
The town council began construction of a new City Hall in Grandfalls last week. A stucco building diagonally across from the school will serve as the city government seat housing the city secretary’s office and a council meeting space.
The case of E. Hill versus Texas and Pacific Railway Company has occupied the 109th District Court this week. Plaintiffs seek 25009 damages for injuries Mary Hill suffered when she was thrown to the floor of a passenger coach in the Texas and Pacific yards in 1937. Trial testimony and argument filled most of the week with a mid afternoon jury expected. Attorneys Cotten and Watts of Crane and Rollins and Ross of Monahans appear for the plaintiff. Judge John Howard, Henry Russell and Earl Earp represent the railway.
A complete official tabulation shows 1958 poll taxes paid for 1938 in Ward County. Ed Hocking deputy reports 60 exemptions issued on certificates.
1939 automobile license plates are now available at the Sheriff's office. Plates can be put on starting March 1 and must be displayed by April 1. Ward county quota runs from F55-46 to F58-101 for passenger cars. Plates are gold with dark purple numbers.
Mr and Mrs Hubert Mortis announce the birth of a son named Michael last Saturday night. The baby weighed seven pounds three ounces. Both mother and child are reported doing nicely.
Otis Morgan returns to Monahans Motor Company as sales manager succeeding Vaughan Grady who has left the firm. Morgan, a former City Councilman, previously left Monahans months ago to take a position with the Ford agency in San Marcos.
Thieves entered the High School on Monday night and stole 95 dollars from the Annual Committee desk in the library. School officials and local police are acting to catch the culprits as a series of petty thefts and window breakings continue, says Superintendent Lewis.
The Robinson Auto Supply Company announces distribution in the area for the Quick Charger a device that tests and charges batteries in 10 to 20 minutes per G E Robinson.
The Sixth Annual Firemen's Ball at Tubb Hall promises a grand carnival style event with souvenirs and favors for attendees. Ray Hummel and his ten piece orchestra will perform from nine to one, and a strong ticket drive reports high turnout with sales at local drug stores and table versions at Tower Theatre and Donaldson's Acme Rental Service.
The county basketball tournament pairing Stonehalls and Grandfalls was canceled by mutual agreement. Grandfalls Cowboys showed superiority in regular season games and coach O P Adams expects his team to be sharper for the regional tilt. Monahans has dropped out and shifted to track under coach Harry Holcomb.
Ward county posted the largest rise in old age pension grants, up 26 percent in the first year. West Texas counties averaged a 0.8 percent decrease while the state total rose 2.4 percent. Ward County distributed 6515 dollars in 1938 compared with 5170 dollars in 1937.
A 16 man drilling crew from Amarillo arrived in Monahans seeking housing for eight families and eight singles. The crew, employed by Manning and Martin of Denver, will drill on the Sinclair leases in Crane county with locations of their camp not yet disclosed. Bill Ellis of Pecos has been selected to take entrance examinations for West Point. A former Pecos High School football star and current student at John Tarleton College, Ellis is a cousin of Johnny Smith of The Monahans News staff.
Mrs. Fred Blumentritt returns home after a two week stay in Hot Springs New Mexico.
Bernie Kuber local manager of Shaw Jewelry Co is confined to his home this week due to an attack of the flu. He is a prominent local business figure.
John Howard Monahans counsel said Judge Drane's ward county seat decision will likely be sustained by the Appellate court. The case was before the El Paso Appellate court on February 2 and a ruling was expected by next Thursday. Justices Nealon Higgins and Walthall hear the briefs in the controversy.
Blackie Martin, 30, an ex convict described as a three time loser, was found with a stolen car and wounded in the leg after a pursuit near City Hall. He will be turned over to Federal authorities on a Dyer Act violation. Authorities link him to a 1931 San Angelo jail break with a soap pistol.
Chamber of Commerce directors voted to underwrite 75 dollars per month to keep Captain and Mrs F A Hammond as heads of local charities. Church groups city and county and private individuals will be asked to subscribe to the fund.
Grandfalls city officials debated private water proposals last week as contractors considered building a system. Mayor J R Wills said the council moves with care and action is expected soon. If deals fail the city may seek state education board help to buy 36000 in water bonds voted last fall.
Atlantic Refining Co. increases stake in South Ward field Ward county by purchasing the R. R. Penn estate's half of two leases in section 16-34-HT&C. It now owns Bennett A lease southwest quarter and Bennett AB lease north half northeast quarter, with five wells and three producers respectively. Consideration listed as $38,000 and $10,000 for the two leases.
R G Tex Patillo of McCamey, an oil man, announced the purchase of 80 acres in Ward county from Humble Oil. The site lies north of the Pecos River southeast of Grand Falls and is viewed as an extension of the Pecos Valley Pool in Pecos county. The deal, worth $30,000, leaves Humble with a 1/16 overriding royalty and Patillo with deep rights as work begins on one of two wells.
H P Davis announced a chamber of commerce luncheon to be held next Monday at the Methodist church. Guest speaker Jack B Larriby will discuss a constitutional amendment to allow creditors to attach 25 percent of a debtor's current salary.
Donaldson has leased the Lone Star Courts on West Sealy from Mrs. W A Estes. The property formerly operated as Conoco Courts. After remodeling and new furnishings the Lone Star Courts will offer transients and permanent guests comfortable lodging. The Conoco service station will continue operating.
Phillips Petroleum Company signs a fifteen year lease with Prince Brothers for an ultra modern service station at Sealy and Waller in Monahans. The 70 by 70 foot building will sit between the post office and Reynolds Electric with plans drawn by Burtram Cy Sia of Dallas. Details on construction type and cost to follow in a few days.
Captain and Mrs F A Hammond who ran the Gospel Army station here left for Los Angeles to confer with directors. The station will be closed during their absence and reopen around February 27 unless instructed otherwise on their return.
The Wade Steam Laundry has changed hands and now operates as the Worth Steam Laundry under manager Cp. H. McGinley. The firm will continue to provide the same high quality service including handling quilts and blankets for patrons.
C. W. Mitchell recently moved from Big Spring to Monahans and is constructing a new house in the Gibson Addition on the town’s southwest side.
The truck load limit bill to raise the cap from 7060 pounds will be before the Legislature on February 21. Representative James H. Goodman urges Ward county interest parties to attend or contact him. W M Agey of Agey Drilling Co. encourages truckers to attend or wire and write Goodman to oppose the 7000 pound limit, arguing unfairness to truckers and dependent businesses.
W D Drennan 66 longtime Monahans resident died of pneumonia Tuesday afternoon at home. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ and interment was in Monahans cemetery. He was a Bas trop native and had been ill three weeks. Survived by widow three daughters Mrs John Travis Yates Mrs Albert Pomeroy Mrs Marvin Russell all of Monahans and two sons Bailey and W D of Stamford. Sister Mrs A Kincaid wife of Ozona ranchman is noted as a sister of the deceased.
Miss Kathryn Shanks niece of Dr. W. O. Rehmeyer accompanied him home Friday after a business trip in the east. A York Hospital graduate she will be attached to Rehmeyer Hospital in York Pennsylvania for the time being.
Jackie Newton daughter of Mr and Mrs L O Newton of Wickett suffered a bicycle accident last Sunday that cost the tip of her right forefinger. While riding the bike her finger was caught on the handlebars and severely injured, requiring amputation back to the fingernail. She has returned home from the hospital and is recovering.
Mrs Sam Harrell and Dr Harrells sister Mrs M Foster of Lilian returned Tuesday from Tucson Arizona where they have been visiting relatives.
