A string of traffic accidents burdened Sunday from 1:15 AM to 5:45 PM. Frederick Cedillo and Emma Alaniz collide near South 18 interchange. Connie Nagele sustains minor injuries. Police cite improper turn for Alaniz. Hernandez and Nagele also collide. Nagele’s daughter Connie hospitalized then released. Estimated repair costs range from 50 to 125 dollars.
A. L. Spivey pleads guilty to forgery in 143rd District Court and receives a four year suspended sentence. He admits forging his brother's name on notes involving Texas Savings and Loan and Reynolds Furniture. The Ward County Lincoln Dinner at the Colonial Inn tonight features five state GOP officials, decoration by Mrs. Bill R. Parks, and reservations by noon.
Custodians report an over supply of candy scattered across the school grounds from Junior High to the High School. Police collect the candy as investigators seek an explanation for the puzzling incident.
The 34th annual Fireman's Ball starts Saturday night at the County Coliseum with dancing and music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Mack McCray will perform. Tickets cost $3 a couple, on sale from any fireman or at the door. The event is a longtime Monahans tradition and a major fund raiser for the Volunteer Fire Department.
In a special Commissioners Court session the Wickett Community Center contract was awarded to Oasis Builders of Kermit for 24464 dollars with a 90 day deadline. A 125 dollar clean up fee was added to the Cow Palace rental and refunds are possible if the site is cleaned by 7 am after use.
The First Baptist Church of Monahans schedules a revival starting February 12 with Dr. Harlan Harris of Boulder Colorado as evangelist and Walter Buice of Muleshoe as singing leader. Harris is a seasoned evangelist and pastor, with eight years in evangelism following 13 years as a Columbia pastor. Evening services begin February 13 at 7 30 and morning services at 10.
A Gospel Meeting at the Church of Christ at 15th and Main begins Sunday and runs nightly through February 19 with Brother Roy E. Stephens preaching He is a former local minister and the public is invited to 730 p.m services each evening.
Elementary and junior high students in the local school system won prizes in a Dental Health Week poster contest judged by a non partisan committee. First place honors went to Jennifer Lee Charles Melius and Danny Renteria in respective divisions. Honorable mentions included Danny Ward Leslie Reagan and Kim Watson.
Monahans Lions Club voted to sponsor another Dale Carnegie class with time and date to be announced. Mel Odom of El Paso demonstrated the memory improvement course and self help lessons for leadership confidence and right mental attitude at the Tuesday luncheon at Colonial Inn. President Walt Roeber presided. guests included Don Williams Ray Thompson and Mike Newton.
Alice in Wonderland presented by Monahans High School seniors with Cynthia McDaniel as Alice. Two performances today and tomorrow in the auditorium. Elementary show tickets 50 cents. general public tickets 75 cents tomorrow night at 8. Director Loyd Shirley. vivid scenery and costumes by 31 senior members.
Ward County Boy Scout units plan displays at the Ward County Coliseum Exposition from 6 to 9 p.m. about 200 Scouts celebrate National Boy Scout Week under the direction of Barry Minke with ribbons for participants. The event coincides with related Expositions in Kermit and Andrews.
Miss Gayle Settle, 17, Monahans High School senior, was crowned Band Sweetheart at the annual Band Banquet in Tatum Cafeteria. About 200 band students and dates attended the formal, sponsored by Band Boosters. She is a flute player, three year Varsity band member, first lieutenant, Honor Society member, and Citizenship Award recipient.
Mona hans High School band sends Tommy King and Jimmy Lambert to Houston for the Texas Music Educators Association four day meeting and grand concert. Lambert named to All-State Orchestra and King to All-State Band. They travel with Dan Gibbs Kenneth Mills and Jerry Finnel. The grand concert at Sam Houston Coliseum begins 8 p.m. Saturday with 8000 plus expected in attendance.
A 39 member 4 H group from Ward County enters prize animals in El Paso International Livestock Show. Judging swine lambs and beef runs daily with local winners expected via Johnny Harrison County Agent. A special livestock judging team from Monahans includes Mark Anthony, Lestie Boxley, Bill Kelton, Kye and Michael Seale.
