Claude Gilstrap Arlington State College head football coach and athletic director will speak at Monahans High School banquet on March 24. Gilstrap, noted after dinner speaker and successful coach, has led Arlington State teams to 55 wins 12 losses and 2 ties since 1953 and earned four Junior College Coach of the Year awards from Texas sports writers.

Ward County taxpayers meet January 31 deadline with collections from three agencies ranging 86 to 93 percent. Monahans-Wickett Independent SD reports 93.2 percent ($779,556 of $836,119. valuation $50,084,880). City of Monahans collects 86 percent ($140,850 of $164,312. valuation $13,692,710). County tax assessor-collector Tennie Davis estimates over 90 percent collected. All agencies report collections ahead of last year.
Monahans police logged 26 thefts and burglaries in January up from four in December as Chief John Ashcraft notes. Items stolen included two cars both recovered, a television set, hubcaps tools a rifle and other items. The department also cited motorists 101 times and issued 531 parking tickets. Ashcraft appointed chief replacing Sam Hulme and staff changes included transfers and new hires.
A fire starting from a makeshift wood stove gutted a home at 202 N. Carol at 6 05 p m Thursday. Fire crews likely prevented spread to nearby buildings. The house owned by D W Booker was occupied by P L Robinson at the time.

John Ashcraft Monahans chief of police and a Ward County sheriff's deputy will attend a special FBI sponsored conference on rising automobile thefts. The meeting occurs at the Lions Club Room at Terminal Tuesday and aims to study the national trend.
Commander A C Pierce and officers of Monahans Commandery No 102 Knights Templar were praised for their precise ritual at a recent inspection by Sir Knight Elmer E Watkins Eminent Grand Warder Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Texas. The Eye Hospital run by Knights Templar of America provides surgical eye care regardless of race creed or color to those unable to afford it. Last year over 800 patients were treated. 176 were Texans. Pony League Association officers discussed adding a fifth team due to more players graduating from Little League. President Harold Kirby said a decision will come at the February 22 meeting after compiling a player list.
Ward County 4-H and FFA members join a regional grass judging contest at the Southwest Livestock Show in El Paso. Team includes Jean Thornton Gen eva Thornton Melissa Suther land Carey Wilson and Charles Potts with four competitors plus an alternate. They depart Wednesday and will also compete at the San Antonio Livestock Exhibition after El Paso.
The poll tax count reached 4172 at noon Saturday with a few more orders to be written. Tax Collector Tennie Davis reported 159 exemptions had been issued as well.
Mona Hans Youth Center delegation meets with City Council to seek aid for a strained budget. Council to revisit Monahans Country Club lease and consider beer sales in restaurants, tax adjustments, butane sale installation, and a filed claim by S and S Grocery.
Funeral services for Jesus Estorga 17 of Monahans were held at Christ the King Catholic Church with Father John Lauretti officiating. Interment followed in Monahans Cemetery. She died at home Friday morning after a long illness. Born August 11 1942 in Grand Falls she was survived by her father Domingo Estorga of Monahans.

Monahans built a 42-34 victory over Pecos to seize an undisputed lead in District 2-AAA. John Dunagan starred from the corner as Monahans adjusted in the third quarter, while Pecos guard Parnell Christopher limited Lobos shooters. The win tightens the race as Pecos drops to second and Andrews falls behind after a loss to Ector.
