Sam Zweiger announces his candidacy for Ward County Commissioner Precinct 2 in the Democratic Primary on May 4. He emphasizes expanding recreational facilities, meeting with oil field workers, and serving taxpayers efficiently, pledging to visit residents to learn their ideas. Continued on Page 2.

A change of venue motion in the murder case of Cleetas S. Calderon Jr. was overruled by Judge J.H. Starley in 143rd District Court. Trial set for February 25. Calderon charged with the October 8 1973 shooting death of Catarina Falcon at her 501 N. Carol residence during a family argument. Calderon free on bond. Other defendants in heroin, burglary, and swindling cases set for February 25 or ongoing.
Three men from Odessa, C G Massey P L Roberts and R W Byford are suspected in the Monahans Airport burglary. Two of them are in City Jail after release by Odessa authorities while a third remains in Odessa on forgery charges. About $1000 in equipment was stolen and a weather scope a unicom radio and a credit card machine were found in Massey’s car.
County political filings indicate five county and precinct races on the May 4 primary ballot. Unopposed incumbents and multiple challengers fill districts including 143rd District Clerk, County Judge, Precincts 2 and 4, and Justice of the Peace Precinct. Absentee voting runs April 14 to 30 in the County Clerk's office.
E W Whitt owner of Dubs Air Conditioning announces candidacy for Commissioner Precinct 4 in the May 4 Democratic Primary. He urges all registered voters to participate, noting his Ward County residency since 1947 and inviting support from local residents.
Monahans to host a three hour disaster drill February 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. at City Hall. Local Emergency Operations Center will coordinate with simulators in another area via radio and field phone to test the city plan. A group of 16 representatives from city agencies utilities schools and hospitals select simulators and field coordinators to feed data to the EOC.
Convicted killer Edsel V. Heslip, already serving life for a September 16 slaying in Monahans, faces another murder trial in Hudspeth County for a 1973 Sierra Blanca shooting. He pled guilty to a Fort Worth murder in January, with the earlier plea changed before trial. He also faces assault with intent to murder in Maggie Powers’ beating the same day.
Senator W E Pete Snelson of Midland announces he has filed as a Democratic candidate for re election to the Texas Senate from the 25th District. The district covers 35 counties in West and Southwest Texas and the May 4 primary date is set.
