The City Council invites bids by 2 p.m. February 23 for a water line from Hogg Ranch to Monahans. Expected total cost about 550000. Southwest Laboratories is named as the citys inspection agent for pipe quality and compliance.
Suzan Swain’s portraits of 251 insect species from the United States and Canada go on display at Sandhills Museum Monahans Sandhills State Park. Park officials say the exhibit runs Saturdays and Sundays 9 AM to 7 PM from February 7 to April 5, while the park itself stays open daily 6 AM to 7 PM for outdoor activities.
Lion Bar McGill and auctioneer Lion Bob Stockstill led a Chinese auction at the Lions Club Tuesday meeting. Proceeds to the March of Dimes totaled $56.80 with items sold at twenty-five cent bids. Local merchants donated items.
Permian Building Inc of Fort Worth won the Monahans post office lease. The 10 year contract with 10 year renewal covers 4 240 square feet plus parking and truck space. Construction may start soon with completion by July 1 to November 12.
Dave Fillpot of Hardin-Simmons University will speak at the Brotherhood gathering at First Baptist Church at 7 30 Monday evening. Royal Ambassadors will be honored and Sam Beam will perform special music while pursuing a Bachelor of Music at HSU. Beam recently earned a BA from HSU in 1955 and is interim music director at University Baptist Church in Abilene. Fillpot, a Childress native, leads the HSU Ministerial Alliance and promotes youth revival work statewide.
Howard Price local insurance and real estate man returned home Wednesday after two weeks in hospital and will not be back in his office for a week to ten days. He is up and about the house and invites friends to call.
Tax collector Tennie Davis announced that persons applying for new automobile license tags must bring their title and last year’s registration papers. New tags went on sale Monday and must be purchased by April 1. Sales have been brisk this week, the Tax Office reported.
The judge mandated an audit and a grand jury investigation of the court trust fund. The action follows concerns over fund management and potential irregularities requiring formal review by fiscal authorities and prosecutors. Court officials expect cooperation to ensure accountability and transparency. Jim Morris, notable journalist and UT journalism graduate, has joined Monahans News as news editor and reporter. He brings four years in the US Air Force and prior experience at Kilgore News Herald.
Monahans issued 308 595 in building permits in January with 194 595 in residential and 114 000 in commercial work. The largest item is a 100 000 Presbyterian Church project at 401 East 16th Street.
Burglars broke into Pyote and Barstow schools Wednesday night. Barstow reported no thefts while Pyote loses between 400 and 600 dollars. No prints found. Pyote had prior robberies with offenders previously caught. Sheriff Mc Nerlin provided details.
A West Texas congressman, Burleson of Abilene, chairs the House Administration Committee and co–chairs the joint committee on publications with Senator Hayden. The Government Printing Office, publisher of the Congressional Record, handles nine million dollars in envelopes and paper bids, prints the daily record, and operates as a government entity with unionized workers paid prevailing wages.
Thieves broke into Luckie's Grocery in Wickett between 10 p.m. and 6:50 a.m. Wednesday and looted two safes for a total of $520. The big safe in the office held most of the cash including silver dollars and various larger bills. A smaller safe yielded nothing of value. The alarm failed to trigger and deputies call it a professional job with no clues.
Mrs. J. L. Ragsdale, 78, died of a heart attack Wednesday at noon at 705 S. Alice. Her husband, a long time Monahans oil field trucker, died seven months earlier. Survived by three daughters, one son, three brothers, five granddaughters, two great grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. Funeral arrangements by Barnes Funeral Home.
Earl McGill city chairman announces the March of Dimes campaign will end Saturday as all coin collectors throughout town gather to complete the drive.
An audit and grand jury probe are ordered over a District Court Trust Fund shortfall of 3750 dollars covering funds dated 1946. Judge J H Starley notes misplacement since 1949 and details a 3700 dollar cashier's check plus 50 dollars cash received January 31 1959.
Four applications remained on file at the courthouse for the County Veterans Service Officer post as the Commissioners Court prepares to fill the job Monday. The candidates are Earl Earp Ray Coon Thomas Marlow of Monahans and James Lamothe of Pyote. Any further applications must reach County Judge by 9 a.m. next Monday.
Fire of undetermined origin caused between 3000 and 5000 dollars damage to the T C Harrison home at Grandfalls around 2 PM Tuesday. The Harrisons were away. a passing motorist alerted responders. Grandfalls fire alarm was frozen, and firemen were summoned by phone. The blaze started in the attic and was blamed on faulty wiring or a faulty central heating unit. Damage stayed in attic and ceiling of the brick residence near Grandfalls on the Crane highway.
Calvary Baptist Church schedules a February 9 to 15 revival with speaker Frank Dearing and singer Dewey Baldwin. Services begin at 10 AM and 7 45 PM daily. A nursery is provided for children up to three years old. The public is invited.
