Curtis Ray Roberts convicted of the June 13 1960 Pecos service station armed robbery has filed a writ of habeas corpus in the 143rd District Court seeking to have the conviction set aside.
Mr and Mrs George W Netzel and their son Jimmy visited Los Angeles from Midland Odessa after Jimmy invited them. They flew 8 25 a m from Midland to LA with a layover in El Paso, enjoyed a brief outing, and returned to West Texas two hours five minutes later claiming the trip was a lot of fun and magnificent. It was Mrs Netzel s first flight. 3600 miles is a long way to go for a hot dog.
Monahans shows growth in 1970 with the index reaching 103.12 percent for the year and 101.03 percent for December. Utilities, building, and financial activity rose while July lagged. services expanded from 2,951 to 3,172 customers. building permits hit 431,275 dollars. telephone, electric connections, and bank deposits all increased. Monahans merchants voted at the Retail Trade Committee meeting to keep the traditional George Washington birthday date. They will skip February 13 15 and set February 22 plus an extra day after for promotions and sales.
Seventeen Ward County 4-H members and eight adults travel to El Paso for next week’s stock show. Lamb exhibitors include Beverly Boling Pam Gage Billy Tucker Barbara Tucker Becky Meek Tavia Gage Lesa Bunts Alice Rushmore James O'Brien and Dan Harkey. Barrows will be shown by Mike Woods Dub Woods Rhonda Boling Len Boling Howard Morgan and Jim Harrison. The group will show 20 lambs seven barrows and four steers with chaperones listed. Livestock events run noon Saturday through Thursday with sheep and hogs in competition and a judging team event. The Ward County Horse Show follows February 27 awarding two production buckles to 4-H members for pen cleanliness and resource management. The open horse show features multiple categories and is open to any Ward County 4-H member with a horse as of January 1 1971. The Annual Ward County Junior Livestock Show runs March 3-5 with open horse show March 6 weighing in March 2 parade March 3 judging March 4 and auction March 5. Ab Freeman presides with officers and the show is dedicated to James King and H B Perk Eudaly with a 12 30 March 5 dedication and 1 00 auction.
Monahans Housing Authority postpones its meeting to Friday at 10 00 a m in the City Administration Building Council Chambers due to a member illness. Chairman Jack Grant said the session will select an architect.
Members of the Mona Hans Day Care Center met Friday night to decide on a slate of new officers to be elected on February 26. Several current officers could not attend, and the president was unavailable.
The Band Boosters host a pancake supper Friday at the County Coliseum starting 5 30 pm with bacon pancakes hot coffee and baked goods. Adults 75 cents children 50 cents with all proceeds aiding the local school band program and its trips awards and banquets. Continuous entertainment features elementary junior high and stage bands.
County Assessor A M Rowan reports the final Ward County registrations for this year total 4646 unless late mail brings postmarked January 31 additions. This compares with 5355 registrations last year in a non presidential year with multiple elections.
