Kenneth Luckey of Mill Creek Indiana will assume duties as minister of the Moonahans Christian Church and the Wink First Christian Church. He succeeds Bernard E. Plumb, now at a Booker church. Services begin this Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Wink church. Luckey and his wife Arlene with their four children will reside in the parsonage.
Monahans-Wickett board selected E L Buck Kent Tuesday to fill the unexpired term of Sears Brown who died last week. Kent serves until April 1962. An April 2 election to fill two vacancies was ordered. candidates must file by March 2 with Business Manager Glenn Elrod.
The Ward County Historical Society calls a 3 p.m. Sunday gathering at the Monahans Community Center to prepare a program for a joint meeting with the Texas Permian Historical Society. J Conrad Dunagan chairs the effort and invites locals with Ward County insights. Mrs. James Creek of the Permian Society will read a diary entry from a cover wagon crossing Ward County in 1870. Mrs. Orbeck will share observations on adjacent counties. The joint meeting is set for May 29 with the Ward County group presenting the program.
Harold Kirby, newly elected president, calls 8 p m today at the Hickory House for a second organizational meeting of the Monahans Pony League Association. The agenda includes selecting players for team rosters and finalizing league reorganization with all interested persons urged to attend.
Funeral services for Roland Cheatham brother of Irving Cheatham of Monahans and teacher at MHS were held Wednesday. He died in a hospital at Waco.
Groundhog predicted six weeks of bad weather. A thunderstorm dropped 0.07 to 0.25 inches of rain in Ward County, followed by high winds and cold temperatures. Official totals show February beginning with 0.11 inch moisture and yearly rainfall at 1.00 inch across Monahans, Ward County, Wickett, Grandfalls, Barstow, and nearby locales.
Funeral services for George Nelson 91 of Jal New Mexico are set for 3 30 p m at Barnes Funeral Chapel with interment in Kermit cemetery. He died at Winkler County Hospital at 3 30 p m Wednesday. Born February 3 1868 in Crenshaw Alabama he was a retired farmer and a Methodist Church member.
Osorio Gomez, 30, on a sixe month's pass from Old Mexico, was charged with car theft after pilfering a car from a First Baptist Church parking lot and using the same vehicle the following week. Bond set at $5,000 as authorities traced the suspect to Barstow. The report hints at a moral about clever planning in crime.
Mrs. Gladys Shipley filed a second claim against the City of Monahans seeking 1500 in damages after the sewer system allegedly backed up into her store. The prior claim alleged city negligence in maintaining the sewer system with materials cost of 1000 and labor cost of 500. City Manager Morris Howard said the matter is with City Attorney R B Mc Gowen Jr and may be on the council agenda Monday.
A R Archer announces his candidacy for District Attorney of the 143rd Judicial District covering Ward Loving and Reeves Counties. A Baylor and Abilene Christian College graduate, he has nine years in practice and vows to handle all cases efficiently and vigorously with rights of the accused respected.
H M Duncan, a Shell Oil Co. lease operator living in Monahans since 1946, announces candidacy for constable of Precinct 2 in the Democratic primaries. He says he feels qualified and will work diligently if elected.
L M Mac Hudgins of Lubbock is named manager for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Monahans replacing Ken Cochran who resigns February 15 to enter plating business in Houston. Cochran led Monahans office since 1957. Hudgins began with the company in 1949 and has recent supervision in Lubbock. He is a Texas Tech graduate with a business degree and is married with two children.
The Ward County Library, open ten months, lent 33 676 books and periodicals in 1959. A total of 2 211 volumes were added, with 1 901 purchased and 310 donated, bringing holdings to about 11 877 volumes.
Mrs. D. E. Nichols of Grand Falls and George Buckles of Monahans were reappointed to the County Library Board as the Commissioners Court met Monday morning. The session also approved paying claims.
The court dismissed nine old criminal cases and transferred the J. C. Avary case to the 118th Judicial District in Howard County. McKelvey pleaded guilty to burglary of a coin operated machine and received a two year sentence. Several defendants forfeited bonds for failing to appear and multiple suspensions and prison terms were handed down for theft, DWI, and burglary charges.
Funeral services for Mrs Birdye Belle Brewer 69 a Monahans resident since the early 1930s were at the Church of Christ with Roy Stephens officiating. She died at her daughter Hazel Yates home at 1 50 pm on January 28 born November 25 1890 in Gladewater Survivors include daughters Hazel Yates and Mame Williams five brothers Lou Smith Carl Smith Alton Smith Loyds Smith Joel Smith Edgar Smith one sister Velma Reed and two grandchildren Michael Williams and Viki Yates
Funeral services for Douglas Thrasher, brother of Monahans Mayor Julian Thrasher, will be held Friday afternoon at Welch's Funeral Home in Longview. He died at 9 a.m. Wednesday at a Laredo hospital. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Methodist Children's Home in Dallas.
Monahans firemen extinguished a blaze under the hood of a car driven by Mrs. J. W. Stone after she backed over a gas meter at 203 N Main. Heat from escaping fumes ignited fumes. most wiring on the engine was badly damaged. The fire was reported at 11 05 a.m. Wednesday.
Final poll tax count believed complete reaching $4168, reported Wednesday afternoon by the Tax Collector's office.
Richard McConnell Clark of Monahans earned a Master of Fine Arts in Drama and Perry Peden Dawson Jr. of Barstow earned a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at Texas University's mid term graduation last week.
Morris Howard, general chairman of Ward County March of Dimes, announced more than $6,125 counted so far with additional agencies to report. He expects about $400 more from the final tally as money from WEW Dance, Teenage Balloon and Record sales and other drives awaits tabulation.
Albert Rider pled guilty in County Court to selling intoxicating beverages to a minor and was sentenced to 10 days in Ward County jail. He admitted the sale after three teenagers told police they bought beer at the Little Cuba cafe northwest of Monahans.
