Waldman Orchestra Engaged by Firemen Ball at Tubb's Hall

The Waldman Orchestra led by Herman Waldman will perform at Tubb's Hall next Wednesday February 9 for the Monahans Firemen’s Ball and Carnival Celebration. Proceeds aid fire department maintenance with a capacity crowd hoped. tickets available by call 151 and table selection offered. The group features Rex Priest and the Ramblers Trio with noted brass and popular vocal numbers.

Birthday Ball Aids Fight Against Infantile Paralysis

More than 200 couples danced at Tubb's Hall Monahans celebrating Roosevelt's Birthday. A $153.65 contribution was sent by Monahans to the state committee chair for the Birthday Ball for the President. Local treasurer Mrs. Weary Finch announced funds will be distributed from the office. The event, led by women’s clubs under Mrs. Dave Ne and Mrs. R. F. Roberts, supported national efforts to fund scientific research for prevention and treatment of infantile paralysis. The national committee estimates over $2,000,000 will be raised nationwide.

Oil Field Science Class At Wickett High School

A new Oil Field Science course began at Wickett High School sponsored by the State Board of Vocational Education and the American Petroleum Institute. The program runs two evenings a week for 12 weeks, with 7:30 enrollments on Mondays and Thursdays. Notable enrollments include workers from Cabot Carbon, Gulf Oil, Humble Oil, and Wickett Refinery, with instructor J. C. Hostetler guiding the program.

Poll Tax Records Highlight Monahans Voting Power

Ward County sees a county record in poll tax receipts with Monahans sub station issuing 1472 receipts and 156 exemptions of 2473 receipts and 199 exemptions for the county. About 100 more receipts were paid January 12 13 when Sheriff Dyer collected taxes and Barstow added another 100. Roughly 200 Monahans residents hold out of county receipts, giving Monahans about 75 percent of the county vote and balance of power in elections.

Imperial Wildcat No 1 A McKee Prospect Drilling

In northern Pecos County near Monahans a prospect well named No 1 A McKee at 5 294 feet depth has pulled 2 1 2 inch tubing and prepared to run drill pipe to screw and remove a 7 inch liner with a packer. Swabbing showed no gas or new oil to bottom of tubing. A canvas packer was set opposite the Simpson saturated sand at 5 271 80 feet where the test headed oil.

Wickett will gain a modern air conditioned theatre with 400 seats. The OK Theatre Corporation of Dallas will start construction as soon as material arrives from Dallas and Monahans within two weeks.

The Monahans Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual banquet and ladies night at 8 p m in the Presbyterian Church banquet room. Gulf Oil Carbon Black and Ozark Chemicals reps will give industrial talks as part of a snappy program coordinated by H F Grayson. The secretary notes past year wins include lower gas rates, insurance rate cuts, and county seat efforts. 1938 plans hinge on county seat settlement. Monahans Boyv Captures Welterweight Title in Golden Gloves

Monahans Beck won the 146 pound welterweight title at the Big Spring district Golden Glove meet after two three round decisions. He defeated Bostick by unanimous decision and outboxed Ersal Robinson to clinch the district crown. Beck advances to the state tournament in Fort Worth on February 17.

Trend Favorable To Monahans in Court Battle Over Votes

Judge J A Crane presides at Barstow for the 109th district as 49 Monahans witnesses testify on last November's votes. Of 454 contested ballots, about 60 percent favor Monahans while 40 percent favor Barstow. Proceeds include daily witness totals and law questions to be settled later by the court. 39 Per Cent School Tax Paid To Date

Monahans-Wickett Independent district reports 39 percent of 1937 school tax paid, about 90 000 dollars collected. District established last April, spans nine miles south of Monahans to county line and two miles beyond Wickett. School board notes cash on hand to cover past due debts and current accounts without borrowing.
