Apache Oklahoma weekly features Brutus a creature with cat ears and rabbit hind legs. The half cat half rabbit eats cat food, hops on haunches, slaps with a paw, and lacks a true tail. The piece notes Brutus is gentle though timid and a curiosity. The editor previews a photo proving the odd pet.
Thirty Ward County 4-H livestock exhibitors depart for the El Paso Livestock Show February 4 to 12. This is the largest Ward County group yet with steers lambs and barrows shown. Auction sales wrap the week on February 11.
A March 31 all day symposium at Ward County High School Auditorium hosted by the Trans-Pecos Section Society of Petroleum Engineers aims to explore Deep Drilling and Development in the Delaware Basin. Speakers from Gulf, Mobil, Humble, Northern Natural Gas and others will discuss regional geology, market potential, rig requirements, well control and cementing practices. The event draws up to 500 attendees and highlights ultra deep gas reservoirs.
City of Monahans reports January 1966 building permits totaling 31250. Jack Forga’s report lists one residential permit for 18000 and six additions and repairs totaling 5450. One commercial new construction permit for 4000 and two more for additions and repairs totaling 3800.
Mike Wright, Monahans High School senior timpanist, was selected for the All-State Band for the second time after tryouts in Lubbock. He becomes the first MHS student to make the ensemble twice and will perform in Dallas at the Texas Music Educators Association annual meeting. Fellow Big Green Band member Jimmy Lambert, freshman percussionist, was runner up for honors.
A Denton firm won a $710000 project for 19 753 miles of paving on US 80 and IH 20 in Ward County. Asphaltic concrete paving and a one course surfacing are planned over about 100 working days. Archie J. Sherrod Odessa district engineer quotes the schedule. Charles H. Gatchell Monahans resident engineer will direct construction.
The Lobo basketball teams travel to Odessa to play the Eagles Friday night as three games remain on the schedule.
Lawrence Thornton a 26 year old Midland oil field worker is free on 5000 bond after being charged in a Wickett fire. Ward County Sheriff W B McNerlin says Thornton was arrested in Midland and returned to the lockup where he was charged. He is accused of setting fire to Frank Posey home and car. Posey’s daughter in law Mrs Thornton is Posey’s daughter.
Ward County Democratic Club announces a meeting at 7 30 in the Reddy Room of Texas Electric Service Co. Public invited, said Mrs Edna Jo Scott chairwoman.
Wickett resident W B Luckie announces candidacy for Precinct Four Commissioner. He notes the new precinct includes Pyote Wickett and Thorntonville and outlines years living in Wickett since 1941, business ventures in groceries construction and local work. He pledges to serve Ward County and earn public confidence if elected.
County Chairman Bill Eason and Republican Louis Pinkerton will accept applications for party primary ballots until 12:00 a.m. February 7. Offices include District Clerk County Clerk County Judge County Treasurer and several Precinct and Justice positions. Incumbents plan reelection and several challengers have filed. Tax Assessor Arthur Bowman reports about 3250 poll taxes issued with additional late receipts and exemptions pending final tallies. The office extended hours to midnight for late voters.
Cast of The Taming of the Shrew at Monahans High School rehearses for a senior class presentation directed by Lloyd Shirley. Authentic costumes from Permian Playhouse Midland are in use as a 20 plus member cast prepares for a February show with ticket sales benefiting senior activities.
City police report holding a person for no license. A driver’s license issued to Marie Keen McGowan of Midland was found and is at the station. Midland officials have been contacted, but Mrs. McGowan has moved.
Geo R. Bentley a 35 year Ward County resident and five years in Monahans announced his candidacy for County Commissioner, Precinct Two, in the Democratic Primaries. He emphasized active county involvement and pledged to advance Ward County with sound, responsible government if elected.
Auto tag sales started Feb 1 at the court house auto registration office and continue to sell well. County tax assessor A. M. Bowman described the new tags as white on black with CZ to CZK prefix changes from last year. Motorists must buy tags by midnight March 31 or incur a penalty.
Congressman Richard C White announces his candidacy for re election as United States Representative in the Texas 16th District subject to the Democratic Primary. He will file in all twelve counties and credits Ward County residents for progress while pledging to continue work.
W A Gotcher Justice of the Peace in Precinct Four announces candidacy for re election in Democratic Primaries. He pledges to continue his efficient administration and asks citizens to support his campaign. He vows fair impartial court service with courteous treatment for all in his court.
Monahans delegates at a one day West Texas Industrial Conference met at Midwestern University in the Student Union Building. Attendees totaled 238 with the group from Monahans including Charles Baker Mac Hudgins Roland Maxwell Rev Fred Ryle and Pat Murphy from the far western point.
