Monahans residents praise the Explorer as the first U S satellite though late to Russia’s pace. City Chairman notes Army veterans helped launch it while thanking numerous clubs and organizations for support of the March of Dimes drive. End with gratitude to sponsors and police.
Monahans firefighters answered three calls late last week. At 9 30 a m Thursday they were sent to the Maying Washeteria 815 East 4th with no damage. Friday at 10 22 p m they extinguished a chicken house fire behind a residence at Seventh St and Fay Ave with little damage. Saturday at 1 35 p m greasy clothes in an automatic washing machine caught fire at 601 S Dwight causing damage only to the washer.
At the Ward County Tax Assessor office by midnight January 31, 1958, 3199 poll taxes and 66 exemptions were issued. Tax Collector Tennie Davis notes the total, including voters over 60 with free ballots, is 3265, well below expectations for a key election year. Monahans groups aided in tax issuance as last week’s drive urged locals to pay.
Ed Crites district superintendent for Gulf Oil Corporation was unanimously elected president of the Monahans Rotary Club for 1958-59 at the club luncheon. He will succeed Dr F M Applegate in July who becomes vice-president. Don Brown will succeed Dick Hover as secretary treasurer with new directors Ray Bevill and Moose Yeary joining the board.
Holbrook High School selects Miss Sandra L Holbrook to represent the school at the state's Government Day event in Holbrook Massachusetts.
Monahans hosted a strong March of Dimes drive with the Mothers March raising 1345.20 in a house-to-house effort. Jaycees ran KVKM Radio Day boosting MOD totals by over 600 in advertising sales. Community groups and local clubs contributed, and county drive leaders target a $5,000 goal with events planned through next weekend.
John H. White 77 a longtime Monahans resident died from a sudden heart attack at his home 803 South Stockton about 7 a m Friday His wife Minnie Ann died Jan 18 two weeks earlier He was born March 21 1880 in Plano Texas and lived in Monahans since 1929 A retired construction contractor he also operated a cabinet shop Funeral services were at 2 p m Sunday at First Baptist Church Monahans with Rev Levi Price and burial followed at Monahans Cemetery under Barnes Funeral Home Survivors include son John C. White of Waco brother R D White of Inglewood California two grandchildren and two great grandchildren
Monahans completes its Five Year Improvement Plan step with a new sewage disposal plant Put into operation around 4 pm Tuesday January 21 the plant cost 300000 and was built by Walter D Bellamy of Monahans Designed by Classen and Kistenmacher Engineers the facility handles 400000 gallons daily and can be expanded to 600000 gallons This modern plant includes a settling process a sludge digester and high filtration and discharges purified water for irrigation purposes
Congressmen Rutherford reports progress on a Pecos River canalization and salinity relief bill. The measure, cleared by the House Reclamation Subcommittee and Interior Committee, awaits Rules Committee action and aims to boost water flow to about 154000 acres in New Mexico and 56000 acres in West Texas. Benefiting counties include Ward Winkler Reeves Pecos and Loving.
Funeral services for James Henry Moseley of Grandfalls who died last Wednesday were held Friday afternoon at the First Baptist Church of Grandfalls with Rev C B Harper officiating assisted by Rev Pattillo of the Southside Baptist Church of Monahans. Burial was in Monahans Cemetery under Barnes Funeral Home direction.
Elbert Ro Dutean Rodgers a Gulf Oil Corporation lease pumper in the Wickett area and J G Wood production foreman in the McElroy area will both receive 30 year service awards on February 10 and February 17 respectively. They began with Gulf Pipeline Company in 1918 and 1935 and have held multiple roles across Ranger Breckenridge Borger Pampa Kilgore Olney Longview Sand Hills and Wickett. A Fort Worth dinner later in the year will honor Gulf employees in the Production Division with 25 years or more of service.
Lawrence Reynolds Jr 33 was charged with a hit and run after a traffic incident early Wednesday morning. He was taken into custody and released the same day on a 50 cash bond. The News reported Reynolds hit another vehicle and fled the scene. The paper retracts its accusation and says he is alleged to have been involved.
