The city weighs annexing 4000 acres in Winkler County to protect its water supply amid state moves to curb home rule annexations. Legislation likely to pass in Austin could limit Monahans power, with officials seeking a carveout for waterfield investments and awaiting court injunctions and ongoing political battles.
Four civil cases are set for trial Monday in Judge J H Starley 143rd District Court Ward County Courtroom with results from last Friday's pre trial conferences. Tentative jurors report at 9 30 a m. docket calls at 9 a m. The ready cases include Hughes v Liberty Mutual Watts v Rassman Curtis v Argonaut Insurance Wesch v Anderson Erickson v Demps Lowe v Travelers Insurance Davis and Bewers v Hardie. Two cases were removed from the docket Klewer v Bertram Hurst Fuquay v Missouri Valley Construction and Isbell v Humble Oil and Refining may settle prior to convening. Settled out of court Eddison and Choate v Travelers Insurance. Dismissed Agey v Tucker.
Monahans High School announces 32 students on the first semester honor roll. Seniors total eight, juniors 17, sophomores seven. Texas Highway Department requests sealed bids to resurface 3,764 miles of U S 80 Sealy Avenue and State 18 Main Street through and near Monahans. Bids due 9 a.m. February 17 at Austin. Plans available from W A Davis chief resident engineer.
Monahans Jaycees started a community development survey to gather residents opinions on local issues. Questionnaires are handed out door to door with a return envelope provided for mailing responses.
A stabbing Monday night outside the Blue Lantern Night Club on Grandfalls Highway sent Jimmy Rowe, 23, to Ward Memorial Hospital in fair condition with back wounds. Jerry Jackson, 29, an oil field worker, faces aggravated assault charges and will appear before the Ward County Grand Jury. Constable Jack Smith and Deputy Sheriff Bob Hundley investigated.
The Kiwanis Club of Monahans announces a truckload sale of shrubs pecan and fruit trees around Feb 10 at the corner of Fourth and Main across Farr Store. Proceeds help youth groups and underprivileged children. a house to house canvas will be conducted.
Canvassing for the 1961 Monahan city directory is complete. Johnny Byrd of Johnson Publishing says advance orders are being taken and the project should be wrapped up next week. Residents and business people contributed to the effort and distribution is planned for late spring.
Monahans Jaycees held their first meeting to plan this year’s carnival set for July 12 13 and 14 Clyde Wilson named general carnival chairman All booths burned last fall in a fire that destroyed Sumner’s Food Store and nearby buildings the group starts from scratch rebuilding inviting businessmen to help with the project
Mrs. J. Conrad Dunagan will be honored as Monahans Woman of the Year 1960 at a tea from 3 to 5 p.m. in the First Methodist Church parlor. Xi Beta Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announced the selection. Dunagan has a twenty year record of community service focusing on education and youth, including service on the Monahans_Wickett School Board, involvement with the Hale_Aiken Committee, the White House Conference on Education, the Good Neighbor Council Education Committee, Edwards PTA, and several Parent and Teachers Associations. She promotes a Youth Code for Monahans and has been active with Girl Scout work on the Permian Basin Council Board. Continued on Page Three.
Monahans in Ward County records show January average temperature of 41.5 degrees, five below normal, with December at 41.4. Daily highs averaged 53.3 and lows 27.7, totaling 1.10 inches of precipitation, 0.25 inch above normal. Temperatures at or below 32F occurred on 25 of 31 days, with a high of 70F on the 17th and a low of 20F on the 28th and 29th.
Monahans man Robert Putnam 42 is jailed again after Presidio County authorities caught him Monday night and returned him here. He had been free on 1000 bond for a prior car theft charge from January and now faces a new car theft charge with a 2000 bond.
City Attorney Holt Magee announces an appeal to the Eighth Court of Civil Appeals in El Paso of Judge Olsen's temporary injunction blocking Monahans from enacting a 12 000 acre annexation plan nine miles northwest, including 4 000 acres in Winkler County.
About two thirds as many Ward County residents will be eligible to vote this year. A. M. Bowman reports 2,830 poll taxes sold and 35 exemptions by Tuesday midnight, compared with 4,177 taxes and 167 exemptions last year totaling 4,344.
A two car crash at 14th and Franklin Tuesday around 8 30 a m caused no injuries but total damages reached 575 Police reported the Mercury sedan driven by Mrs Joan Covington 28 of 700 East C and a Ford station wagon driven by Mrs Bobbie Cooksey 26 of 3106 South Gary were involved Mercury damage listed at 375 and Ford at 200 with no injuries noted.
The Monahans MOD drive has raised 2948.07 with three fundraising events ahead. Events include Mothers' March rescheduled for Saturday from 5 30 to 7 30 PM Teens For Polio balloon sale and a Points For Polio basketball game on February 16 Lobos versus Pecos Eagles. The KVKM TV Telethon raised 5341.02 from Monahans and ten area towns.
The Church of Christ at Third and South Dwight announces a gospel meeting starting Sunday and ending the next Sunday. Daily services begin at 7 30 except Sunday nights at 7. Evangelist John McClish of Fort Stockton leads the meeting with a cordial public invitation to attend.
Funeral services were held at Bowie Church of Christ for Mrs. Dixie May Winton 77 who died Tuesday at Ward Memorial Hospital. She had lived in Monahans last month with son Hoyt Winton. Burial is in Salona Cemetery Bowie. Survivors: three sons Hoyt Marvin and Owen. two daughters Curtis Garrett and Hazel Traylor. two sisters and one brother.
Commercial Electric Motors Inc headed by A. D. Scott has been named an Allis Chalmers distributor. The firm will distribute motors generators and controls in Ward County.
