Pecos River High Bridge Opens During War and Returns
The Pecos River High Bridge, 1,390 feet long, cost 1 200 000 dollars and opened December 21 1944 with the Sunset Limited crossing for the first time. Troop trains and war materials remained a priority, delaying completion but the new structure rose quickly. The original bridge was dismantled in 1949 and sent to Guatemala where it continues to carry traffic across a deep gorge, a relic of two nations wartime cooperation.
