Negro Church Opens In Monahans For Colored Families
The 16 by 20 foot structure moved to the new Negro addition near the depot and donated by E. R. Hill will serve Monahans first Baptist church for the colored population. R. E. Knox funded the lot, Earl West and Mr. King arranged the move free of charge. Pastor Miles W. Jenkins says remodeling soon and services may begin August 15. The church is No. 78 founded by the pastor who also promoted 43 schools. He has served with the Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention and the Southern white convention for over 15 years. He plans to establish a school for local colored children after the church opens.

Firemen Respond To Quick Alarm At Royalty
Royalty volunteers raced 16 miles to a tailor shop blaze late Wednesday afternoon in 18 minutes. Fire gutted the shop and threatened two blocks of the business district. Firefighters arrived too late to save the building but kept flames from spreading to nearby structures. Origin of the fire was not learned.

Ira Hudler tendered his resignation as president of the Monahans-Wickett Independent School District board, saying the role took too much time from his business. The board did not act on the resignation. Contracts were awarded for construction of a 28 by 30 temporary classroom at Wickett to Seals of Monahans and for reconditioning four temporary classrooms in the grade school to Ralph L. Derrick. The band room was moved to improve drivers’ visibility at the northeast corner of the school grounds.

Sierra Blanca Pioneer Dies at 49 in El Paso Hospital
W. C. Brashears, a pioneer railroad man born in Monahans when the town was in Tom Green county, died in an El Paso hospital after months of ill health. Funeral services were held in Sierra Blanca, with relatives from Monahans attending. Surviving are his widow Jennie Brashears, his mother Emma Brashears of Hudsceth county, three daughters and four grandchildren.
