A letter from Plainview discusses the Lions District Convention with praise for speakers and educational programs. It notes Monahans delegates and hints at plans for the International Convention in Mexico City, while also urging local support for home trading and sewer construction.
The Monahans High School band leaves Saturday morning for Abilene to enter Simmons University high school band contest. Band director Chas G Walker hopes to place high in their class. Some students return Saturday night others stay until Sunday. Next weekend they travel again to enter the state band teachers contest at Lubbock.
Readers are invited to spell a name from scrambled letters for a free Texas Theatre ticket for a family to any show next week. Call the News office to claim.
Monahans forms a baseball club planning entry into the Permian Basin League for the second half of the season starting June 20. Ed Harry will be business manager and Scotty Garrison field captain. Key players signed include Ed Harry Shorty Potts Doty Jimmy Scroggins Teen Hawkins Max Boren Ted Worley Neal Cavett and others with local business support backing uniforms and supplies.
Joe M. J. Armstrong of Grandfalls received the appointment as postmaster for the newly designated postoffice at Red Bluff. The postoffice opened for business last week, replacing routing of mail to Orla. Red Bluff is described as a boom town, and the designation will aid town progress.
Miss Pauline Kent hosted a YLSC afternoon at the Frazier residence last Friday. Attendees included Laurell Frazier, Maxine Bailey, Viole Invhay, Missy Model Frazier, and Mrs. Russell Douglas, with Pauline Kent as hostess and two new members Mrs. J C Avary and Mrs. Orville Garrison joining.
George Jr. Rhodes announced that starting May 1 W. R. Avent will serve as acting manager of Jimmy's Cafe for three to four months. Avent, with over a year at the business and years of cafe experience, will be aided by Bert Deason. The cafe is being redecorated and repainted for a neater interior while Mr and Mrs Rhodes plan to stay in Monahans for most of the period and take short trips.
The two week Baptist revival ended Sunday night with a baptismal service as 23 candidates joined the church. Rev Woodie W Smith of Fort Worth preached, Miss Madell Frazier led singing, and Mrs J A Summerhill played piano. Rev Leon Frazier praised the results and invites all at the church for Sunday services.
Evangelist C. B. Shopshire of Ordes will start a protracted meeting at Pyote on May 20. The sessions will be held at the Baptist church and the public is invited to attend.
The Church of Christ invites worshippers to attend Sunday School at 10:00 A M Communion at 11:00 A M and Night Service at 7 30 P M Mid week Bible Study meets Wednesday at 7 30 P M All are welcome to worship.
Fort Stockton hosts the American Legion rodeo May 3 and 5 with world famous performers from the San Angelo and Fort Worth shows. Judges include H D Mendel Joe Bunton and Louis Roberson. Riders and cowgirls from Phoenix Buckeye St Thomas Clifton London Pecos Rankin and more enter. A full program features three dances free swimming at Comanche Springs and a daily street parade.
The Baptist WMS meeting at Wicket featured a program on The Banner of the Cross in medieval and modern Europe. readings included A Cloud of Witnesses Hebrews 12 and How the Banner of the Cross Went to Europe, with prayers and songs. refreshments followed for members including Mesdames Andrews Shanks White Monroe Garner Hill George Hogg Conditt Leach Pigman Cheates Hoge and Miss Madell Frazier.
Aunt Jane Estes and son G. B. spent Tuesday in Big Spring visiting Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Gray. Mr and Mrs A. Tannehill hosted the outing. Richard Warren, Southern Pacific traveling agent based in El Paso, was here Thursday in SP business.
Earl Estes was appointed acting postmaster of Monahans replacing Mrs G B Estes who moves to the Estes ranch. Estes is a longtime resident and widely respected in Monahans. The article also notes a Ford chassis demonstration by Monahans Motor Company drawing hundreds of spectators.
Sunday evening at 8 o clock the Presbyterian congregation will meet in the Methodist Church. Minister Harry Cox will preach on Worthless if Detached. All Presbyterians and others without a church home are invited to attend and will be warmly welcomed.
A fire of unknown origin destroyed a large quantity of mail in boxes at the Grandfalls post office last Friday April 19. The loss was limited by early mail delivery. many patrons had already collected their mail before the blaze was found.
Our church notes a spiritually fruitful revival season with many sinners saved. Regular services are Sunday with Sunday School at 9:45 A.M. and preaching at 11:06, U S All departments at 7:00, evening service at 8:00. W M S meets Monday afternoon. Prayer meeting Wednesday at 7:50. All Baptists urged to attend and others will receive a hearty welcome.
At a council meeting last Wednesday night the mayor’s appointments for city posts were approved. Milda Vernon becomes secretary, J E Sham water superintendent and city marshal, Jack Wright treasurer, and George K Slayton city attorney. Enrollments are for one year. Wright succeeds F R Wildman who left the city limits and thus could not remain treasurer.
Four Lions, Lester Deollison Edwin Chase Rex Smith and W H Guy attended the Lion District 2-T Convention at Plainview. They report a good convention and a good time. Ralph Randall of Panhandle was elected District Governor and Childress named Convention City for 1936.
Mrs. Monte Stoughton of Wink entertained the Happy Quartette Bride Club with a dinner. Barney Hensley of Royalty won high score while O. M. Perryman of Monahans took second. Lonnie Casey won a guest prize with art consolation to Jack Druatcjae royalty. Two tables of guests included Jack Stunlap and others. next Wednesday evening Mrs. Howard Walters of Monahans will entertain.
Mills Chevrolet and Standard Coach lead weekly totals with C. W. Garrison and My R. Wildman cited. Monahans Mover Company adds a pickup, Cox and J. In. Myles supply a coupe and a sedan respectively.
