Providential Escape Under An Ancient Oak In 1855
In summer 1855 a group of about thirty children returning from District School near Cincinnati sought shelter under a giant oak as a thunderstorm raged. A cautious girl warned against sheltering under trees, and the party pressed on to the village. The oak was later struck by lightning, its branches torn and the trunk scorched, but the children survived. The tale warns against seeking shelter under solitary trees in storms.
