Garfield and Arthur Nominated by Republicans at Cleveland
After six days and on the thirty sixth ballot the Republican National Convention chose James A Garfield of Ohio for President. Chester A Arthur of New York won the Vice Presidency on the first ballot. The document carries a long summary of the party principles and calls for constitutional amendments, civil service reform, and protection of pensions and battles of the war. Garfield’s rise from humble roots and long service in state senate, Congress, and the Senate is outlined along with Arthur’s career as a lawyer and politician and his hub of political offices under Grant and Hayes.
