Destructive hailstorm tracks near Port Byron

Eye witness accounts describe a two mile wide hail belt from LeClaire across the river toward Cleveland with drifts six inches deep and hailstones up to three inches. Crops in Zuma township and surrounding farms suffered total loss or severe damage to corn, wheat, oats, and fruit trees. Reports note shattered windows, damaged roofs, and livestock hazards while local stores rush glass and supplies.
