Growth of pearls in Muscatine bed linked to germ disease
A Muscatine dealer suggests the pearl bed near the Muscatine bridge may be affected by a germ disease that triggers abnormal pearl encrustment when sand enters a clam shell. The bed yields large pearls in small mollusks, possibly due to rocky river bottom or swift currents, with shells often scarred or deformed. Clammers report high pay from this bed and many gems found on mollusks in this spot.
