Surrender at Yorktown Ends British War Effort
The Yorktown siege sealed Cornwallis's fate after allied Washington Rochambeau and Grasse trapped his force in Virginia. French and American troops stormed redoubts, breached defenses, and forced surrender on October 19 1781 with 7274 British troops and 840 sailors capitulating, marking a decisive turn toward American independence.
