Launching of the George Waters steamboat at Lyons
The Moline Navigation and Excursion Co launched the George Waters, a new river steamer, on Saturday the 17th before about eight hundred spectators. Mayor Root of Lyons spoke, and engineers and boatmen observed the plan while the vessel floated bow first and then was drawn back. The boat, draft about four and a half inches without engines, will receive boilers and heavy parts later. Godfrey & Co will equip it for the Moline company, with risk to fire and operations. Spring delivery is planned, then return to the Clinton and Davenport trade once the Verne Swain moves on. The crowd noted the boat’s graceful entry and declined to break a bottle on her bows.
