Lancereaux argues wine, not alcohol itself, leads to cirrhosis based on 210 cases over 35 years, showing higher incidence with wine heavy intake in Paris versus lower in Brittany Normandy and Maui where brandy or arrack dominate. He attributes the toxic agent to sulphate of potassium in wine and notes animal feeding supports this, while other experts see fatty liver changes from alcohol but not full cirrhosis.
