Beach inventor bets on air tube freight plunge
Chicago inventor Mr Beach seeks to link Chicago and La Salle with a sealed air tube. A tube fifteen inches wide would move packages at ten miles a minute using compressed air and exhaust engines at each end. Capitalists show interest though experts doubt feasibility and real costs.

How the Government Obtained Cheap Rent on the Moline Post Office
A Sunday Morning Dispatch inquiry reveals that 5 W. F. Wheelock provided a four room post office in Moline for $12 a year for five years. Henry Wells, then postmaster, persuaded Wheelock to accept a low rent while Wells and later L. E. Hemenway kept the arrangement, after which rent rose to $800 annually, letting the government effectively pay for most of the building's value over eleven years.
